Try starting vlc in a terminal and report what it says. |

Code: | Bia ~ # vlc
VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry.
If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports
you can use vlc-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and
cannot be run by non-trusted users first).

Do you have dbus installed properly? Do you run your X session as root? |

/etc/init.d/dbus status should say:
Code: | bas89@bas89-pc-gentoo64 ~ $ /etc/init.d/dbus status
* status: started |
You shouldn’t run your X session as root. Never. Please configure a display manager like KDM oder GDM properly and login as an usual user. |

check if you have X useflag enabled for dbus and vlc.
vlc gui is not installed properly it seems. _________________ reach out a little bit more to catch it (DON'T BELIEVE the advocate part under my user name) |

You need to run vlc as the same user that runs the X server.[1] You must not run the graphical login session as root.
[1] You can get around this, but it would be far safer to do things properly than to bypass yet another safety check. |
