[solved] clear screen on initial login

After an emerge -uDN world the initial login behaviour has changed and I can't identify the culprit. Before, the kernel and init script messages stayed on the screen: this, obviously, was a good thing as it meant they could be read as intended.

Now, they're briefly visible, but then when the login prompt comes up, the screen clears. Sysvinit was among the updates so I guess that could be the problem but I can't see where exactly it's happening, and I've grepped for clear and reset in /etc and can't see anything suspicious in there. It's possible this happened a few days ago with a pam update and I've just noticed it now. It's not just the initial login either (basically bash is acting as though I had "clear" in .bash_logout all the time, whether I do or not), but it's only at the initial login that I don't want the screen cleared.

Does anyone know what's clearing the screen, and how to stop it?

I'm suspecting it's util-linux-2.20, or specifically agetty. But I haven't played around yet to confirm it. Ok, I had a quick look at agetty's help, this one looks interesting:
