PostPosted: Thu Sep 22, 2011 10:25 pm    Post subject: Nvidia-drivers not compiling or not working at all... Reply with quote

I was looking through the posts for others who have had similar problems...

my problem is that the stable Nvidia driver 275.09.07 compiles, but when used in KDE, gives me blank screens or even black screens when more than one window is opened or I try a pull down tab (like bookmarks)...and this one is marked stable...

So I decided to try to compile all drivers to see if they'd actually work...

270.41.19 is marked stable but, does not compile due to
Code:
* ERROR: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-270.41.19 failed (compile phase):
 *   Unable to emake HOSTCC=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc CROSS_COMPILE=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu- LDFLAGS=  IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes V=1 SYSSRC=/usr/src/linux            SYSOUT=/lib/modules/3.0.4-gentoo/build CC=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc clean module

173.14.31 is marked unstable, but is the only one that works on my system...

173.14.30 is marked stable, but does not compile due to
Code:
 * ERROR: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.30 failed (compile phase):
 *   Unable to emake HOSTCC=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc CROSS_COMPILE=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu- LDFLAGS=  IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes V=1 SYSSRC=/usr/src/linux            SYSOUT=/lib/modules/3.0.4-gentoo/build CC=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc clean module

96.43.20 is marked unstable, but compiles--although I didn't test it...

what are some answers here?

Knowing what card you have might help.

1/ Your Ge 6150 should be OK with 275 series. Nvidia even recommends 280 for this card.
2/ I am running troublefree nvidia-drivers 275.09.07 + KDE 4.6.5 with my 9800 GT.
(Running Xorg-server 1.10.4 / 2.6.38 kernel)

- What were you running prior to 275.09.07 ?
- Anything wrong in xorg.logs ?
- Is is only under KDE or also under plain X ?
- There has been in the past (around 2.6.36) known black screen problems with nvidia. Can you test with an < 3.0 kernel ?

I have found the last version that really works is 173.14.31, but haven't tried the 275 drivers with the lower kernels...

Where would I find the xorg.log to see if there is a problem?

also...not sure if this would create the same problem in X as I have only used KDE...

not sure what else to do...what other 'tests' can I try?

I use startx...on startup, it defaults to KDM...

I have my xorg.0.log at pastebin...also noticed I have xorg.1.log and xorg.8.log...not sure what those mean...and it looks like I need to clean up xorg, but don't really know what to do there (I'm more of a user, no skills there)

The Xorg.0.log you posted, had you had your blank screen problem immediately before you captured your log ?

EDIT : Is compositing enabled or disabled. If enabled then disable compositing.

that was posted yesterday afternoon, after I 'tested' all of the nvidia-drivers...

should I install the new driver, then post the new xorg log?

Yes please but wait for the problem to occur before capturing the log.
And disable compositing.

This "is marked un/stable" comments looks like an hidden complain as "It is mark stable but doesn't work"
And you're using an unstable kernel 3.0.4, just to remind you where your logic fail there...

To help you i would say :
Don't use kernel 3.x series until everyone will be more aware of troubles that series might just gave because the first number grow from 2 to 3, as this is enough to show weakness on many programs/scripts/ebuild... that doesn't handle that as they should.
And looking at your kernel headers version, i would say, use a 2.6.39 and i'm pretty sure the drivers will work as they should.

thanks krinn, no complaints, hidden or unhidden here...I was trying to see for myself which drivers I could compile, as an experiment...one of my interests was to see whether the packages marked stable or unstable were working on my system, and whether or not I should attempt to go back to an all stable environment...and furthermore whether or not mixing software branches was creating problems on my system...

Nope...

nvidia-drivers-275.09.07 doesn't work on my system...

I rebuilt/downgraded my kernel to 2.6.39-r3, recompiled the nvidia-drivers and while Konqueror has 2 tabs...I get a 'blank' Bookmarks tab and if I open any other program, the window that opens (Kontact, in this case) is black...

Why do the 173 drivers work and 275 don't?

maybe because 173 doesn't have that option and 275 yes and your card have troubles with it
Code:
* If you are having resolution problems, try disabling DynamicTwinView.

also you should check that :
Code:

  * QA Notice: Found an absolute symlink in a library directory:

and that too :
Code:
 * IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf' needs updating.

Else lookout nvidia forum for your card and driver specific trouble, if it was a general 275 trouble, every owner of nvidia card would have complain already.

I don't think I have resolution problems...

1. How would I change the absolute symlink? and do you think that is the problem?

2. I ran etc-update before I rebooted into the environment...

for me i see that new option is (at least) known to trouble with resolution, but as you, i don't know what a "resolution" problem could be, except and this time not like you, that i assume that "resolution" might just hide some others troubles : it's a new function and it seems many users report troubles with it already : enough for me to consider it unsafe so.
and having a card that put some random windows black could be the same effect as one user seeing a fully black windows that will then be report as "resolution" problem.

move the symlink away (don't delete, just move them away), reinstall nvidia drivers and it will recreate them, or ln -s yourself if you're in mood.
i don't think it would be a problem, but that's not what QA team think, so i would say i trust QA team more than me.

I have GF 6100 and use
Code:
[I] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers (270.41.19@14.09.2011): NVIDIA X11 driver and GLX libraries
Code:
Portage 2.1.10.11 (default/linux/x86/10.0, gcc-4.5.3, glibc-2.12.2-r0, 2.6.37-gentoo-r4 i686)

I have used nvidia-drivers since 260.* with gentoo and always works good. I don't use KDE. I hope this info help You somehow.

I would suggest trying out the latest NVIDIA drivers, they're masked due to causing major problems with gnome apps, stuff like gnome-system-monitor and xarchiver making them use 100% CPU constantly but since you're a KDE user it shouldn't matter, just the same as it doesn't matter to me since I use openbox.

All you'll need to do is unmask them then just try them out.

I unmasked the 275 version again on my computer, compiled the driver and tried again to make the blank screens happen...they're certainly not as prevalent, but the 3rd window that I open (in this case 1-Konqueror, 2-Okular and 3-Kontact), Kontact shows as a black window in full screen mode. When I collapse the window, it becomes viewable.

I tested this in other orders as well, with other programs...and every 3rd window becomes black...

The one thing that is different is that the pull down menus on Konqueror are now fully visible, whereas before they were blank--not black, but just blank gray windows...

with the black screen up--here is my xorg.0.log:
http://pastebin.com/8mr71hKq

I'm not sure how to move the symlink, so to test that I'd need a little more guidance...

I'm pretty sure that I don't have dynamictwinview enabled...

I'd sure like to solve this problem, or at least find out exactly why I'm having this problem...

-Try without kde, to check a problem only with kde and a bug in kde (ahah from all i have read about kde, if it's that, you better switch to another DE, looks like kde devs are bull heads)
-You can seek out nvidia forum for trouble with 6x card (but as l4nce shown already, you might not find something useful against that card serie, but maybe something against that card and kde exist in their forum already)

Because i'm afraid your problem won't be answer by xorg.log and black/empty windows looks like you're lacking video memory
- try higher your shared memory (look in your bios for video memory option)
- test with a 640x480 resolution to lower memory consumption
- test with composite disable to remove 3D (this will also lower memory usage)

- And last, stop the auto detection crap, build a real xorg.conf that will do what YOU wish : you will stop using all those screens for nothing, stop loading the nv driver while having the nvidia-drivers loaded...

thanks krinn, I'm certainly not a software developer, but choose to use open source, so some of these things I have trouble with...
Code:
Because i'm afraid your problem won't be answer by xorg.log and black/empty windows looks like you're lacking video memory

Perhaps, but this doesn't explain why I didn't have any problems with nvidia drivers previous to 174...does it?
Code:
- And last, stop the auto detection crap, build a real xorg.conf that will do what YOU wish : you will stop using all those screens for nothing, stop loading the nv driver while having the nvidia-drivers loaded...

ok, I agree in principle, but xorg is so complicated to me and the last time I tried to change some things, I completely borked my system...if you have some specific ideas to try, I'd love to hear them (for example, disabling nv driver--is it as simple as taking nv out of my etc/make.conf file?)

thanks again...and I'm gonna solve this thing no matter what... :?

In theory yes, but you never know what they could change in the drivers : like forcing a double buffer while older driver weren't using it (for nvidia) or like kde devs that are using something older nvidia drivers were handling and newer not (for kde)...
per example : ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/177.80/README/appendix-b.html
if you look at that option :
Quote:
Option "AllowSHMPixmaps" "boolean"
This option will be disabled by default in a future driver release.

Default: on (shared memory pixmaps are allowed).

And your xorg.log says it's disable, this tell us two things: if one use that option to draw something
1- It tell that "one" (kde/xorg/anyone you wish) is using an option nvidia already says they won't allow in newer drivers, not the first time someone is using a deprecated thing that will cause issue later. Could explain older drivers are working and newer not
2- That my assumption that xorg.log won't be of help was wrong :)

There's plenty way to solve that seriously :
- you can seek out a xorg/6x couple ready made in google
- you can ask another user his xorg.conf using nvidia driver and a 6x card, and per example l4ance could have been of help for that
- you can ask another user his xorg.conf using nvidia driver (i'm afraid mine isn't that clean, but if you wish it)
- you can try xorg --configure to have a basic xorg file to work on
- you can try the nvidia (i don't remember the name) but nvidia also build an xorg.conf autobuilder
- you can also use the one in nvidia drivers readme i think there's one in some appendices somewhere
- you can grab one in that forum because many users output their own xorg.conf

You will have of course to adapt it a bit, but it's always easier to start on something that you know is working or just because visualy seeing the file is nearly always enough to gave you hints.

For the nv, remove nv from make.conf will tell portage not to emerge it anymore, this will not remove it, you have to ask portage to remove it

And i'm not a software developer too, just a user.

ok...here's the latest...

I installed the latest nvidia-drivers-285.05.09, which then allowed me to install xorg-1.11, after rebuilding all of the dependencies (synaptics, mouse, evdev, etc), unmerging x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv, running revdep-rebuild...

and now, no black screens and everything works fine...not sure why, but it now works...
