Give me numbers:
1) How has the developer population grown or shrunk over the years? How has the turnover rate changed?
2) How has the bug close rate changed? Better or worse?
3) How has dev activity changed over time, as measured by Ohloh or CIA ?
Everything else is noise, to which people apply their biases. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

The article is actual really good and mostly down to the facts
The reason, why Gentoo was popular in 2002-2004 was because of Portage (I think). There were no really good package managers out there with version control etc.
This was also a different audience, I notice more and more that people just cannot concentrate or really dive into something. More people are using Linux, or computers in general, the numbers of Gentoo users might have increased but not compared to the 'click, click, done' distributions. _________________ Gentoo on Uptime Project - Larry is a cow |

Gentoo is immediately hopeless for me !
In that... I get absolutely no illusion of any kind !
- Today's Gentoo satisfies my today's expectations.
- Yesterday's Gentoo was satisfying my yesterday's expectations.
- It as been so for two years.
What about tomorrow ?
I just cannot tell... I do not know what I will expect tomorrow _________________

I am running gentoo on nearly all pcs and servers I have. As the link states, it is not for those who know nothing about the underlying system. Gentoo is highly configurable, which is key in most of my applications.
Gentoo will not be getting the majority of users as Ubuntu does, but for those who are creating workhorse devices with fast bootup, Gentoo is the one. _________________ Sincerely your

By the way, I'm no dark prophet trying to forecast the death of Gentoo. I only posted this to let others know of the article at "The H" (http://h-online.com/-1327656) which itself didn't forsee a bright future for Gentoo.
[ I didn't know the quote in the article was four years old though... :( ] |

People will always prophesy that you are going to die, since the very moment you are born.
If they never stop saying it, eventually, they will be certain.
This has always been the same for Gentoo, since it was born. It probably was the same for Enoch as well but I wasn't around by that time. In any case, if you are truly concerned all you need to do is to subscribe to the mailing lists, click the latest posts link in the forums and emerge --sync everyday, then judge by yourself. |

I didn't find the article was painting Gentoo in a negative light, after all, it finishes with Quote: | Gentoo is for the hackers and delvers who want to explore and dive into their systems and swim a little bit further and faster. |
I'm confident that Gentoo, or something very much like Gentoo (Funtoo/Exherbo etc.) will survive, as there will always be people for whom a binary distribution is not suitable. _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

The article is not bad!
In 4 pages it contains only a few lines of criticism... nothing special, nothing unheard of, same old things _________________ "Dear Enemy: may the Lord hate you and all your kind, may you be turned orange in hue, and may your head fall off at an awkward moment."

I personally think Gentoo is entering its golden age again. It seems like Gentoo is growing faster and faster, since the slump a few years ago and...There's no feasible way to get what you get with Gentoo on a binary distro.
One of my big complaints about all these articles about Gentoo is that people seem to LOVE to say that Gentoo is for the speed freaks and the hardcore linux folks. I disagree with that. If you can read, you can install Gentoo and post-install, it's fairly easy to maintain a Gentoo system once you understand how to do stuff, but that's how it is with most distros. As far as Gentoo being for speed freaks, I kind of disagree...Sure the performance is nice, but it is not why i run Gentoo and I think, not why many people run Gentoo. Myself (and others, i'd think) run Gentoo because of the power it gives you over your system. You have choice. Choice over dependencies, choice over package versions, choice over features. As we all know, with binary distros, you choice is generally dictated by whatever the distro developers CHOOSE to give you. All these articles fail to mention that part and that's the reason Gentoo is great IMO. |

What gets me is....
This is an article from 4 years ago.
How many times has it been posted on these forums that Gentoo is dying?
Are there Ubuntu trolls populating these forums?
I tell you, canonical has a lot to answer for. _________________ Whatever you do, do it properly! |
