|
|
I installed konsole and when I try to open it, I get the screen but don't get the prompt.
The error that appears in the konsole is Code: | Warning: Could not start program /bin/bash with arguments /bin/bash |
I created a new profile for the shell and still get the same warning and no prompt to type commands
EDIT: Also firefox doesn't start. I think it has to do with klauncher. Code: | unable to create io_slave:klauncher said error: loading kio_file |

I have just had this message opening a new konsole tab. I had been remotely updating world via a KDE session running on FreeNX, which included the kde stable update and it appeared to have stalled. I cannot ssh into the machine either and will have to see if I can get local access.
Have you resolved the problem? It may be related to this thread? |

I solved the problem temporarly. I get now other error, which I think is related.
The error is Code: | bash fork resource temporarily unavailable. |
It gives this error few times (~5), until I get the prompt. BUT, applications still don't launch. Firefox, Code: | bash fork resource temporarily unavailable. |
Same goes for other applications. But some applications do work. LIke, kate, vlc.
My solution was to create a new user.
Usually when fork fails it's a swap issue. but swap is mounted, it uses 0 swap
In my case it's not the same as with the mentioned thread. I don't have yacc installed. I have the latest stable bash 4.1-p9. Please let me know if you manage to solve it.
PS: after emerge sync, update-world, the problem of fork dissapeared but I still get warning without getting the prompt. I am stumped. Really don't know what to do anymore. |

I managed to solve the problem. I understood that kde wasn't installed properly since some of the files were missing. Also some of the permissions were not correct.
from this link :
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=90087
/usr/lib/kde4/kio_file.so (this file was missing)
/usr/share/kde4/services/file.protocol (this one existed)
So I removed everything related to kde-base and kde-misc and installed kde again from scratch. Also, I took .kde4 from a working laptop and copied it to the relevant pc. |

Glad to see you resolved it.
I have not reproduced it as yet and have the files you listed installed. However I have had processes get stuck in "D" state on several occasions forcing a power off and restart. The common processes that this affects are
tee
sync-supers
nxagent
although there are often others. I thought it may be imminent disk failure, but all smartmontools tests are passed. I do have issues with kio smb shares in dolphin, where file transfer fails and have resorted to manually mounting the shares that are used regularly. This suggests your issue may be related? The other possible issue is that FreeNX is no longer actively developed(although the base libraries from Nomachine have been updated) and therefore may have some conflict?
This machine supports 4 regular users and I do not currently have a fall back, therefore it makes major changes(eg removal of KDE) rather difficult! I am going to try X2go as an alternative to FreeNX and update to the latest kernel. If that does not work, I will probably invest in a new machine and fresh install as the uptime is important and unfortunately IT admin is not my primary job.
Any further suggestions gratefully received. |

Hi baanan
I just saw your message. Did you buy a new computer? Or solved it?
