|
|
So i've been using Gentoo for the best part of 5-7 years now, and i've never seen something this strange.
OpenOffice built fine (eventually) last year or the year before when i installed my laptop.
Ever since then, i've had the occasional build failure, normally when I update a random minor package and revdep-rebuild it wants OOo to rebuild, it fails halfway through but still rebuilds far enough to make it work again.
Until yesterday, that is.
I went through all my USE flags the other day and rejigged them all, after apparently some things became compulsory and enabled themselves (i always had '-vorbis', now apparently it's not optional because my system won't build without it, what's the point of it being optional then?).
Anyway, so doing my emerge -uDNva world, revdep-rebuild, emerge -ev world etc overnight, OpenOffice always failed to build.
The output from revdep-rebuild was along the lines of 'no ebuilds to satisfy openoffice'.
just doing an 'emerge -va openoffice' gives:
Code: | !!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "openoffice" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- app-office/openoffice-3.2.1-r1::gentoo (masked by: package.mask) |
Whyso masked? Hardmasked at that? i've checked the online database, nothing in there to suggest why it's been hardmasked.
the changelog gives no hints either. it's all 'fixed this, fixed that, stable on ppc, stable on x86, etc'. the openoffice-bin is also hardmasked, the latest entry just says 'stable on amd64'.
Also, grep -i openoffice /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask -B 4 -A 4 gives just a very cryptic:
Code: |
# Tomáš Chvátal <scarabeus@gentoo.org> (27 Jul 2011)
# Old replaced packages. Will be removed in 30 days.
# app-office/openoffice -> app-office/libreoffice
# app-office/openoffice-bin -> app-office/libreoffice-bin
# app-text/wpd2sxw -> app-text/wpd2odt
app-office/openoffice
app-office/openoffice-bin
app-text/wpd2sxw |
which doesn't actually say anything useful. 'Old replaced packages'? since when is OpenOffice old and replaced?
Their website doesn't say anything about being 'old and replaced'.
'eselect news list' gives nothing new since the baselayout and kdeprefix removal in May.
So, in short, what's going on?
mod edit by i92guboj: just corrected the title for proper English and added some code tags. Since I linked this thread to many duplicates lately, I want it to be at least moderately readable. |

My guess is openoffice will be dropped in favour of libreoffice. _________________ boris64.net 200x / visit my desktop / try these tiny kernel patches |

Not every package starting with 'lib' is a library. In this case 'libre' means free in various other languages. |

hmmm, so the entire OpenOffice is being replaced with this 'libreoffice' thing then?

Openoffice is probably one of the most popular desktop products (i daresay without it, or something similar, thre wouldn't be nearly as many win-converts as there are), I know I can't live without it.
Surely a change this drastic would be even slightly announced somewhere?
or even auto-directed like mozilla-firefox -> 'plain jane' firefox?
who dropped the ball on this one? |

Oracle, actually. LibreOffice is essentially the next version of OpenOffice. Briefly, the developers didn't like the way Oracle (who acquired OpenOffice when they acquired Sun Microsystems) was treating them and decided to fork the project.
For more details, well, here, let me Google that for you.

Right now, libreoffice is mostly openoffice plus a set of patches that Gentoo already used anyway. So, if you have used openoffice from portage, then you basically have already been using libreoffice for some time now. In any case, it's the dev's decission. They are the ones that put the time and effort, and they can decide what packages they want to work on. It's easy to understand why someone wouldn't want to duplicate the effort and time to maintain two packages that are basically the same thing, at least for now. Time will tell. |

Haven't you read the news?
Since OpenOffice in Gentoo really was Go-Oo already, renaming that stuff would have been a fine solution. Anyway, most people seem to have got around the change as there really weren't many threads, at least not that I remember.
EDIT: Oh, that is actually happening now for arch users? I thought OpenOffice was obsolete a long time ago... |

LibreOffice is slowly replacing OpenOffice; Fedora, Ubuntu, and Arch Linux have already switched in their newest releases.
Fortunately, LibreOffice is compatible with OpenOffice so you won't need to convert your files or use a different format. |

Why wouldn't you use libreoffice-bin?

Assuming you truly have a reason to do this, remember that in about three weeks you will have to move the OO ebuilds to your overlay, since they are being removed from portage, as the mask message told you. |

OpenOffice is being removed because (1) Oracle is being a pain and (2) as a result, OpenOffice is practically dead and (3) as a result of those two factors, the fork LibreOffice (which most of the former OO developers now stand by) has gained the community's favour.
For the end user, there's no change, apart from the new logo and the fact that LO has less bugs and more features than OO. |
