My job just bought me a new machine - an HPZX6000 workstation. It has two 1.3 Ghz Itanium2 process paired with 8GB of RAM and a 36GB 10000RPM SCSI drive.

So, of course I HAVE to have Gentoo on the machine ;-) So I am in the process of installing it now. I thought I would keep a running account of problems I have and how I have overcome them as I go. Watch this thread if you are interested ;-)

First thing I would like to get out of the way is the speed. This machine is DAMN fast at compiling. I run it with "-j3" Makeopts so it will run 3 makes concurrently. This allows it to fill up both processors nicely - and try to use up some of that RAM.

Bootstrap didn't take too long at all (although longer than I thought ti would - around an hour or so). One thing that took FOREVER (well, 15 minutes I guess) was PERL. I think this is because since perl doesn't use MAKE it only uses one processor to compile.

I am doing the install from a version of Redhat Andvanced workstation that came with the computer. I simply reinstalled RHAW and created a 10GB partition that I would use for Gentoo. This is a good idea because if something goes wrong with gentoo I can just boot to Redhat. Also - Gentoo doesn't have a boot CD for IA64 yet so you have to start somewhere....

I simply unpacked the ia64 stage1 tarball into the partition then chrooted to it and began the normal Gentoo install procedure.

I am not sure yet how to deal with actually booting Gentoo - I am going to look into that as I go (I will probably just modify whatever it is that boots redhat - I think it is called elilo).

Anyway - back to the install I will post more in a bit.

Ok, "emerge system" just finished without a single problem... looks like things are progressing fairlly smoothly (Knock on wood!).

Now on to a harder topic... creating and installing the kernel.

Looks like I hit my first snag. I was running "make dep" on the kernel when I got out a really cryptic message about some bad mojo in one of the ia64 asm files... After staring at the message for a couple of minutes it seemed like it had something to do with NUMA support...

So I went back in and took NUMA support out and voila! it works. I am bummed about the NUMA support thing though - I really wanted to try it out. If anyone out there has a fix for this please let me know.

I think it might be fixed in the 2.6 kernel but I can't run that because I need to use the NVIDIA drivers for the 2.4 kernel (seeing as how I have a Quadro4 in this thing).

Later.

EDIT: Please look further down the thread for more info

A little bit of help for anyone out there who is trying to configure a kernel for one of these things...

The best way to do it is to open up /var/log/messages from your redhat install and look at all the hardware it detects - for me there were some suttle things like using an MPT Fusion SCSI chipset - instead of a standard generic one.

Also - use lsmod in your redhat install to see what modules are loaded - this let me see which network drivers I needed to compile in.

If you are having problems configuring the kernel for one of these machines just post your problem - i'll help you out to the best of my ability.

Ran into a problem trying to emerge vcron. It failed saying that there were no packages satisfying "virtual/mta" that were unmasked.

Eventually I ended up just going into net/sendmail - emerging its dependencies one by one and then modifying its ebuild so that it didn't depend on anything and emerging it.

I know I could have just added ~ia64 - but I am trying to avoid that for now because this is my production machine and I want it to be as stable as possible (plus I don't want extra hassle of trying to debug packages that others have already found not to work).

I will experiment with ummmm.... experimental packages later...

Ok, I need some help.

When I rebooted everything was cool - the kernel came up ok and found everything ok - but then when Gentoo itself started to load - it hung right after "Mounting /proc".

I can't figure it out. My fstab is correct, and /proc is compiled into the kernel. It just doesn't make sense.

I am too tired - so I'm going to deal with it tomorrow. In the meantime I have booted back to Redhat and chrooted to the Gentoo partition again and have an "emerge gnome" running.

If you have any help to give on why i am hanging after mounting /proc please let me know. Thanks!

Alright - I figured out the "proc thing". After sleeping it became clear (imagine that!)....

All I needed to do was "mkdir proc" - I just hadn't ever created it... sigh.

Oh - and my "emerge gnome" failed while trying to build XFree. I have restarted into Gentoo now for the first time and I am trying it again - i'll let you know how it goes.

KERNEL HELP!!

Ok, someone has already emailed me asking about how to build the kernel so I thought I would put out some more info on what needs to be done (this is basically what I emailed him back with a few adjustments).

Here are the steps you need (I had to compile these by looking ALL over the net - and perusing some Makefiles):

make menuconfig (then choose all your junk)
make dep
make compressed

Make compressed will spit out a vmlinux.gz file into /usr/src/linux. What you have to do is take that file and use Redhat to put it in /boot/efi/efi/redhat and then modify /boot/efi/efi/redhat/elilo.conf and put a section in there for Gentoo.

Here is what my Gentoo section looks like:

image=vmlinux.gz
label=Gentoo
root=/dev/sda5

The /dev/sda5 needs to (obviously) point at your root partition that you are installing Gentoo on.

Now - I don't know if you have a ZX6000 or what but I'm going to assume that you have an option in your EFI boot-manager (when you first start the computer) to "Boot Redhat Advanced Workstation". You still have to use that option to boot gentoo. But when the ELILO promopt comes up just type in "Gentoo" and hit enter (quickly!). If you want you can edit the elilo.conf so that Gentoo is the default.

I will be making another post soon (in the next day or so) outlining some of the important kernel stuff - so keep your eyes peeled on this thread for more info.

As I alluded to earlier - I was having problems emerge XFree. I ended up filing a bug report on it - and within an hour or so one of the dvelopers, Donnie Berkholz, had replied with an answer. Turns out that in another bug they had a patch that fixed it.

Here is my bug:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34657

Here is the bug with the patch that fixes it:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33353

If you look at the reply Donnie gave me in my bug he tells you how to fix it with a stopgap until 4.3.0-r4 comes out.

Thanks go out to Donnie for replying to me so quickly (and on his vacation no less!).

Now I am "emerge gnome"ing again and we'll see how things go.

Hmm - I just saw on slashdot that 2.4.23 came out today. And reading through the changelog it looks like they fixed NUMA support on ia64!

Hopefully this will take care of my problem earlier. Anyone out there building 2.4.23 on ia64 that can confirm that NUMA works?

Hi ..

Many thanks for your usefull tips in this thread.

Could you please post your kernel config file, I could really use one at this stage.

Thanks,

Note that I have left out intelee10/100 support on purpose - I didn't want to use that network adaptor.

Also note that I have left out IDE-CDROM support. This is an old "hack" where I basically force the cd-rom drive to use ide-scsi (because it is a burner) so I don't have to pass a parameter to the kernel at boot time telling it that that's what I want it to do.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

As I alluded to earlier - I was having problems emerge XFree. I ended up filing a bug report on it - and within an hour or so one of the dvelopers, Donnie Berkholz, had replied with an answer. Turns out that in another bug they had a patch that fixed it.

I removed the first CASE, and it compiled well. Anyway, I don't know if this was the right method and just hope I was lucky...
For gnome, I tried today but it stopped at libbonobo :(
Mozilla emerged with an error, but it's there and seems to work.

@vzeidat: I believe you don't need no more my kernel config (itanium)...

Weird about Gnome - it emerged on mine with NO problems at all. Make sure you have a fairly conservative USE set - I had mine completely empty when I merged Gnome.

Code:
-O2 -pipe

I left the default.
I'll give it a try again right now

Not your flags - your _USE_ variables (the thing that controls whether or not to include optional part of programs). But you probably left that as default too. Let me know what happens.

Also... since you are having problems with Gnome you might take a look at a post I just made about how I got KDE running on Itanium:

OOPs... I replied a bit quickly !
For my USE flags, you guessed right. I didn't add too much, but I had to temporarily turn off one to get gnome:
Code:
USE="-doc" emerge libbonobo libgnomecanvas libbonoboui
emerge gnome

I think I will try to set it up later in the week end... and tell you here what happens.
Thanks for the tips & @++

Here I am again with gnome running now... :D

Now I'd like to get nvidia hardware accel: ebuilds are masked for ia64... or I missed smth ?..
I'll try to manually build vesion 1.0-4050 from nvidia... and if it works, perhaps it will be time for me to try writing my first ebuild !..

Yeah -

The nvidia ebuilds are x86 only - they really need to fix that. I am using 4050 off of Nvidia's website.

A bit of advice:

First of all read the readme that is in the Nvidia_kernel package - it tells you about how you need to replace one line in os_agp.c in order for AGP to work correctly - you DO have to do this.

Next - after you have installed both the kernel and AGP packages from nvidia - run "X -configure" this will autofind all of your hardware and create a XF86Config file for you. It tells you which file it created at the end of its output.

Edit that file and then copy it to /etc/X11/XF86Config and then you should be good to go

EDIT: In your XF86Config - make sure you set "NVAGP 0" - you should be able to see where this should go..

Later,
Derek

Well, I now have hardware accel. Had to tweak links for glx/glcore, but as you pointed, there is a good readme with the package, so it was quite easy to setup properly.

Thanks for AGP tip, but I happened to learn from the MB specs (I cannot open the machine) that the card is on a PCI slot

I thought the new 2.6 supported the ia64... (2.6 is supposely made from the ground up to support the new arch)

There are nvidia drivers for 2.6 in the ia64 for the quadro4 also. (I checked the nvidia page just now)

You have an ide burner right? No u dont need to set it to scsi. It can burn cds without scsi emulation, using the atapi default driver, with no hassles.

I wish I had one off those workstations... :?

Hi ..

Just wondering .. should I add x86 permanently to make.conf? Or just try it out if a package doesn't have ia64??

I read that you got kde working. Is that how you did it (ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" emerge kde) ??

Thanks,

Actually I put sparc in there. I thought it was a foreign enough arch that if something worked on it - it would probably work on Itanium. But do as you wish ;-)
