Ok, I recently installed Gentoo. Got my PCI audio card to work.
The Good:
My audio card works with all CD's, and can run MP3's fine through the file manager in KDE 3.0 and through terminal using "mpg123" or "mpg321" flawlessly.
The Bad:
When I install "xmms" or "freeamp" for playing MP3's, these programs appear to load normally. All funtions and options are working upon starting of the app (ie.. opening/closing the programs, options, and opening the menu to add mp3's).
However after attempting to play an MP3 both programs completley lock up!
Note: I have tried downloading the source files from the websites and installing manually, as well as using portage. I have run into a few problems installing manually, but I think I have worked them out. Portage has worked fine with no errors.
I am really stumped, if anyone has any solutions I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,

Your right! That was it!
Now my MP3 Players work fine. I am newer to Linux and did not know that "aRts" effects your system like that.
Now how do I get my system apps to use my sound card simultaneously?
Please note, I installed my sound card shortly after I built Gentoo. After booting my card worked automatically. So I obviously enabled sound and an appropriate dirver while building my kernel. Is there something else I need to do? And, in "KDE Control Center" under "information" it states there is no information available for my soundcard, does this mean anything?
My soundcard is a "inland PCI 4D-Wave" PCI Soundcard (QX-1004) (VER 3.2A).
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,

ok... your soundcard/driver provides several interfaces you can access... eg. /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer.... to only problem is, when one app occupies e.g. /dev/dsp no other app is able to use it at the same time.
one way around is, to introduce an extra layer, which can handle different audio output streams from different apps.. like eg artsd...
so.. you can use
Code: |
artsdsp myapp
artsdsp another_app
|
and so redirect the apps audio stream from /dev/dsp to artsd.. this works.. but the sound is sometimes delayed, which is no fun in games...
i think this is the only way to go.... does somebody has another idea ?

Alright, I ll try it. But the delay doesn't sound very cool, so maybe I will just leave things the way they are right now.
Thanks, again for helping me getting the sound configured!!
