When I try to stream audio from icecast / shoutcast servers xmms dies. I get this:

xmms
<Init> : Avifile CVS-020503-14:10-2.95.3
<Init> : Available CPU flags: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow
<Init> : 1403.23 MHz AMD Athlon(tm) processor processor detected
<LDT_Keeper> : Installed fs segment: 0x40018000

Segmentation fault

You've probably found a bug in XMMS, please visit

Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x817)!

If you just updated your alsa, you may have a problem. I wasn't able to get mine to work directly with ALSA. But, if you run ESD, and let XMMS use that, it should work fine.

I was just updating some of that stuff and had some problems with it, got it all working though. Can't really remember exactly what I did to get it working again.

I'm using xmms-alsa from xmms.org since it's newer then the one in emerge. Other then that I think I ended up unemerging xmms, alsa-lib, alsa-driver, then emerging alsa-lib, alsa-driver, xmms, then compiling xmms-alsa from source. Something like that and now I have oss, arts and alsa xmms plugins all working fine (I'm using alsa of course).
