Whenever I attempt to emerge xmms it spits out an error telling me to fix something using aclocal and then to try to recompile. I'm not new to linux by no means but I have never seen any errors like that before. I just converted to gentoo from SuSE 7.3 and I must admit I like gentoo but theres just too many weird problems that I cant describe or figure out. Stuff just doesnt seem right. Anyways any help would be appreciated.

Saf :(

I'm not new to Linux either but I've got to tell you Gentoo is one of the few the distro's I CAN find everything without searching in mutliple places. IMHO Everthing feels right! No real problems yet with my installation. Just did emerge xmms on my standard Gentoo installation and works right after:

Recording media-sound/xmms in "world" favorites file...
* Regenerating GNU info directory index...
* Processed 61 info files.

Man I love this ;-)

So please do not give up yet. There must be a (simple) solution to your problems (and we are here to help you if we can) because I KNOW it can work all like a dream :-).

Thanks for the encouragement. I kept on doing stuff untill I gave up and did an emerge automake or autoconf. I had been messing with the autoconf stuff earlier today trying to get a program to compile that needed autoconf 2.25d or something. Anyways that fixed the errors I got during emerge xmms.

since then though ive slammed into a problem when trying to emerge evolution 1.0.3 r6...

i also can't get xmms to emerge, because i can't get avifile to emerge.
i get the following when building avifile:

Code:

c++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I../../include -Wall -Wno-unused -DLINUX -march=i686 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -malign-functions=0 -malign-jumps=0 -malign-loops=0 -pipe -c divx4.cpp -Wp,-MD,.deps/divx4.TPlo  -fPIC -DPIC -o divx4.lo
divx4.cpp: In method `int DIVX_VideoDecoder::DecodeInternal(const void *, unsigned int, int, CImage *)':
divx4.cpp:201: `DEC_OPT_FRAME_311' undeclared (first use this function)
divx4.cpp:201: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
divx4.cpp:201: for each function it appears in.)
make[2]: *** [divx4.lo] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/avifile-0.6.0.20011220-r2/work/avifile0.6-20011220/plugins/libdivx4'

make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

Any ideas?

Well, for what it's worth I think these two are related:

"I had been messing with the autoconf stuff earlier today"

"configure: error: can only configure for one host and one target at a time "

I've looked in Google and autoconf came up a couple of times. It looks like it doesn't recognize your system anymore during configure.

Maybe it would help if you did an emerge --update world after an emerge rsync. I know it's not much to go on.

I did do an emerge rsync and emerge --update world. I get that error during the compile of evolution during the world update.

I just solved this problem on my system by unmerging avifile completely, then merging the 20020419 version.

XMMS works fine now.

You may want to try downloading the source code for XMMS and seeing if that does the trick. :lol:
