gentoo on live-usb

Anyone experienced with gentoo-live-usb (syncs, upgrades, etc.)?

I think about trying it but if it's not like an gentoo-harddisc-system it wouldn't be worth the time for me.

I would by-pass the LiveUSB install and just do a regular install, treating the USB-stick as if it were a hard-disk.

You could even migrate a HD install over to a USB-stick as you would moving from one HD to another.

I would just make sure that you mount the partitions with noatime and forgo the swap partition.

the current LiveDVD images were made with a USB thumb drive in mind
you can even set them up with persistent storage

i don't, however, know if they have the full complement of wireless drivers included, which has long been one of the achilles heels of the gentoo .iso's

that guide itself wasnt geared towards doing much more than putting the minimal iso onto a usb drive rather than a CD. That same guide actually works just fine with systemrescuecd's iso, which is what i used and still use to do new gentoo installs.

I've heard that usb-sticks have an limited amount of read&write jobs.

Does anyone know how long a stick can take it? (Compiling, etc).

Or is there a perfect mini-usb-linux?

One disadvantage seems to be that a gentoo-usb won't run on every architecture 'cause of specific compilation.

May be I should get a i386 distro...

Or is every actual computer compatible with i686?

Maybe DamnSmallLinux.

Hi

i tried to install the new gentoo liveDVD to usb stick so i followed the handbook made for.
Unfortunately when i start my laptop it says "Missing Operating system" and boot to the window's default partition

Is there any solution for me ?
what did i do wrong ?

yes, i tried both
with unetbootin, 'persistence' is written in the grub boot. But i have no persistence (i write a text with abiword or copy a file to documents, whatever the modifications i do, nothing is recorded on the disk. the led of the usb key doesn't blink when i save a document). I tried 'live persistence' and 'persist=casper-rw', but nothing either, i change the casper-rw to a brand new one (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/diskimg/), it doesn't work anymore
i have read it's related to a 'aufs' module. during the boot, i see mounting squashfs and aufs2, loading aufs and, just after, a file can't be found (cdupdate.sh), does it mean something?

anyway, with a fresh install from ubetbootin on windows, the persistent mode would be active?
i have checked the md5. Persistent mode work with some others distributions

i 've just tried the dd method. I format the key in ext3 or FAT32, try both
dd if=/.../liveDVD...iso of=/dev/sdc or sda (I tried on 2 keys: On the first, key is /dev/sdc1, the second is /dev/sda)
the grub command are not persistent (so i add it at boot) and there is no casper-rw at the root
i can't access to the key on windows and on linux, the fs is read-only on linux, so i can't copy any casper-rw to the root
tries all this mess on 2computers (PIII and dual core). Whatever i do, recording fails

what the %!@#$? does the persitent mode work or not?

Hi at least on Gentoo Live 2012-1 getting persistence to work for me was not straight forward, following the FAQ notes on persistence, so I post what I have done and what I've found out:

1. Using the dd, I copied the live image to my 4 GB usb stick doing this according to the liveusb howto from gentoo is even better for the workaround to come cause you may need the usb live system partition writeable.
2. On the unformated part of the stick I created a ext3 file system with the empty file persistence-mode.
3. During boot with the persistence flag, this additional ext3 partition is not recognized and not even tested (on existence of the file persistence-mode). Only partitions on not removable devices were tested on boot.
4. So after switching to tty1, I did some digging around in the init.d script for persistence /etc/init.d/persistence and found the problem at line 56:
