Hi ALL,
I just finished installation on my new Acer laptop. I squeezed the original partition by half and made 3 additional partitions. I followed an AMD64 Handbook and everything went thru fine.
However since I'm not able to boot I figured I misconfigured kernel.

Here is the output of "lspci -v":

Code:

http://paste.pocoo.org/show/397468
[/url]

Also, when I tried to boot Win7 it went to recovery process loop. It just continuosly comes back to eRecovery Management.

Any idea what I need to do to boot Windows?

Thank you.

Donate,
I got the machine boot up.
However, one problem remains: sysklogd says that some files are missing. Namely sysklogd/news as an example.
Any idea?
Thank you.

DONAHUE,
Windows 7 shows my video card as "AMD Radeon HD6310 Graphics". What options do I need for the framebuffer? Does it supported by X?

Thank you.

you can use the proprietary driver which has good 3d acceleration but no kms support or the open source radeon driver which supports kms but has little 3d acceleration. Right now I find trying to have both drivers available in a single kernel is impossible. Which driver do you wish?
Disclaimer: My top radeon is a hd5770 so no personal experience with 6000 series.

The reference is here , if you have trouble with it and need help just ask.
As you have a newer card I'd recommend
Code:
nano /etc/portage/package.keywords
and edit to add ( not needed if you are already ~arch, synaptics if a touchpad, choose ~x86 or ~amd64 depending on your architecture )
Quote:
x11-base/xorg-server ~amd64 ~x86
x11-drivers/radeon-ucode ~amd64 ~x86
x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev ~amd64 ~x86
x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics ~amd64 ~x86

Donahue,
I read the link you provided.
I'm guessing I don't need the code in listing 2.4 as its for older cards, right?. All I need is to install the configuration package and select appropriate kernel option.

Thank you.

Donahue,
Listing 2.4 is for a nouveau card. According to your question I need a support for it.
However I also need listing 2.5 as it deals with ATI cards.

So here is my confusion.

Thank you.
P.S. Also there are options for framebuffer support. Do I need this?

DONAHUE,
Building kernel fails with the following:

Code:

make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'firmware/radeon/PALM_me.bin', needed by 'firmware/radeon/PALM_me.bin.gen.o'. Stop.

Any idea?

Also I turned on framebuffer option with the ATI driver.
Is there abything I need to add to grub.conf?

Thank you.

Use no framebuffers with radeon/kms. quoting the guide:
Quote:
Support for frame buffer devices --->
(Disable all drivers, including VGA, Intel, nVidia, and ATI)

Sounds like the firmware blobs are not incorporated in the kernel config:
Code:
emerge radeon-ucode

Code:
cd /usr/src/linux;make menuconfig
Edit menuconfig
Device Drivers --->
Generic Driver Options --->
Quote:
[*] Include in-kernel firmware blobs in kernel binary
(radeon/PALM_me.bin radeon/PALM_pfp.bin radeon/SUMO_rlc.bin) External firmware blobs to build into the kernel binary
(/lib/firmware) Firmware blobs root directory

Select "() External firmware blobs to build into the kernel binary" a dialog box opens.
Copy and paste
Quote:
radeon/PALM_me.bin radeon/PALM_pfp.bin radeon/SUMO_rlc.bin
onto the blank line in the dialog and enter.
A new line will appear "(firmware) Firmware blobs root directory" Select it and another dialog appears. Backspace to clear it and type in or copy and paste
Quote:
/lib/firmware
enter; the line "(/lib/firmware) Firmware blobs root directory" will appear.
exit menuconfig saving the configuration, ensure /boot partition is mounted (if you have one), recompile and recopy the kernel.
Code:
emerge radeon-ucode

DONAHUE,
After following the advice and installing xorg, I tried to run "startx". After all standard messages, I got:

Code:

.............
Primary device is not PCI
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Please consukt the The X.Org Foundation support
     at http://wiki.x.org
  for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

Any idea?

I can try to manually configure X, but I'm afraid that it won't help.

Thank you.

so far: kernel config needs
Quote:
Device Drivers --->
Graphics support --->
-*- Support for frame buffer devices --->
--- Support for frame buffer devices
[*] Enable firmware EDID
so that xorg can identify monitor capabilities.

recommend ensure /boot mounted, reconfigure and recompile and recopy kernel.

the log shows no attempt to load radeon. results of
Code:
 lspci -k | wgetpaste
of great interest
Code:
emerge --info | wgetpaste

Code:
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf~
if file not found, that's ok
