Hi there, I was trying to emerge -C chromium when Portage kindly informed that

Code:
# emerge -pv --depclean chromium

Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Checking for lib consumers...
>>> Assigning files to packages...
 * In order to avoid breakage of link level dependencies, one or more
 * packages will not be removed. This can be solved by rebuilding the
 * packages that pulled them in.
 *
 *   www-client/chromium-11.0.696.57 pulled in by:
 *     app-cdr/k3b-2.0.2-r1 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavformat.so.52
 *     media-gfx/blender-2.49b-r2 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavformat.so.52, libavutil.so.50
 *     media-libs/gegl-0.1.6 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavformat.so.52
 *     media-libs/libquicktime-1.2.2 needs libavcodec.so.52
 *     media-libs/opencv-2.2.0 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavformat.so.52, libavutil.so.50
 *     media-libs/xine-lib-1.1.19 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavutil.so.50
 *     media-video/ffmpeg-0.6.90_rc0-r2 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavformat.so.52, libavutil.so.50
 *     media-video/transcode-1.1.5-r2 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavformat.so.52
 *     media-video/vlc-1.1.9 needs libavcodec.so.52, libavformat.so.52, libavutil.so.50

Now, as I understand it, I'm supposed to rebuild those packages against ffmpeg which owns those libraries but... how can I do that?

I'm completely confused as to why these packages depend on chromium...
Chromium needs libavcodec.so.52, but that comes from ffmpeg, and in your output the relationship looks reversed.

If the dependencies do indeed get broken, just run revdep-rebuild from the gentoolkit package, and it will sort things out.

Which portage version are you running, and what's the output of
Code:
equery belongs libavcodec.so.52
?
I run stable portage and don't have anything depending on Chromium like that.

Interesting, here's the result on my system:

Code:

$ equery belongs libavcodec.so.52
[ Searching for file(s) libavcodec.so.52 in *... ]
www-client/chromium-13.0.761.0 (/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libavcodec.so.52 -> /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52)
media-video/ffmpeg-0.6.90_rc0-r2 (/usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52 -> libavcodec.so.52.117.0)

But then:

Code:

$ emerge -pv --depclean www-client/chromium

Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Calculating removal order...

>>> These are the packages that would be unmerged:

 www-client/chromium
    selected: 13.0.761.0
   protected: none
     omitted: none

All selected packages: www-client/chromium-13.0.761.0

>>> 'Selected' packages are slated for removal.
>>> 'Protected' and 'omitted' packages will not be removed.

Packages installed:   681
Packages in world:    58
Packages in system:   51
Required packages:    680
Number to remove:     1

Could you post your emerge --info? I'm running a stable x86 system here.

Same for me. I should have mentioned that I try to run as stable as I can but sometimes you just can't. Anyway:

You're running unstable portage, and the behavior can't be reproduced with stable portage. Please file a portage bug.
