Does this mean this is the official next zen version? I want to know so I can make a seed for it and announce where folks can get the patches in my thread.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Pappy

thanks, glad that you like it :)

but it's so much work ;) - especially now that my git-fu has grown,

creating a git repo should be no problem anymore but it takes some time to upload it & setting things up ^^

I'm currently dedicating all my free time to an android-kernel so not much time for a linux-kernel

right now I'm running 2.6.38.3-zen with zcache on top of it & it works quite well

Thanks to Steven for all his work he puts into this !

no, I'm not affiliated in any way with the zen-kernel project

I'm only offering this as an add-on to use zcache

I've tested it for some time now and it includes some fixes (the mentioned one to get btrfs to work) and should work fine

it most probably first will be fully usable upstream with 2.6.40 since 2.6.39 still is missing cleancache integrating Linus hasn't nacked or acked it yet

so if you want to use zcache with 2.6.39 you'll need to patch cleancache in

with this patch I've posted it's already everything there: zcache, frontswap & cleancache and speed improvements for zram (also included in 2.6.39)

thanks !

Enjoy ! :)

to enable it you need to append zcache to your kernel in grub.conf, lilo.conf,

Applies cleanly to current git (.38.3 zen) but does not compile:

Code:
drivers/built-in.o: In function `zcache_pampd_free':
zcache.c:(.text+0x28986d): undefined reference to `xv_get_object_size'
zcache.c:(.text+0x2898b2): undefined reference to `xv_free'
drivers/built-in.o: In function `zcache_pampd_get_data':
zcache.c:(.text+0x289afc): undefined reference to `xv_get_object_size'
drivers/built-in.o: In function `zcache_pampd_create':
zcache.c:(.text+0x28a263): undefined reference to `xv_malloc'
drivers/built-in.o: In function `zcache_init':
zcache.c:(.init.text+0xe70c): undefined reference to `xv_create_pool'
make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Błąd 1

EDIT: solved, compiles after selecting zram also.

EDIT2: if anyone is interested, zcache also applies to .38-hardened-r1 :)

Yep, seeing the same thing with i3-330UM

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/709677

Going to try those cmdline params a little later tonight.

I've re-tested and it was indeed also occurring on -gentoo, I just didn't notice it because the message wasn't bright and shiny (color patch ftw). Adding 'enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1' to the cmdline does not solve the problem. But it's good to know that this problem is not caused by zen :)
edit: didn't have CONFIG_MTRR_SANITIZER, recompiling kernel...

EDIT: I've done some testing, and I've fixed the issue. 'enable_mtrr_cleanup' is all that's needed. Adding 'mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1' makes no difference. In case anyone else thinks they may be affected: this is a correct /proc/mtrr:
Code:
reg00: base=0x000000000 (    0MB), size= 2048MB, count=1: write-back
reg01: base=0x080000000 ( 2048MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
reg02: base=0x0c0000000 ( 3072MB), size=   64MB, count=1: write-back
reg03: base=0x100000000 ( 4096MB), size=  512MB, count=1: write-back
reg04: base=0x120000000 ( 4608MB), size=  128MB, count=1: write-back
reg05: base=0x0e0000000 ( 3584MB), size=  256MB, count=1: write-combining
reg06: base=0x0d0000000 ( 3328MB), size=  256MB, count=1: write-combining
If any entry says 'uncacheable' then you've been hit by this problem and need to enable the MTRR cleanup.

ahh good point, i'm currently running

$ zgrep MTRR /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_MTRR=y
CONFIG_MTRR_SANITIZER=y
CONFIG_MTRR_SANITIZER_ENABLE_DEFAULT=0
CONFIG_MTRR_SANITIZER_SPARE_REG_NR_DEFAULT=1

so indeed will have to try enable cmdline.

No, it happened quite a while after X had launched. My boot takes no longer than 30 seconds.

hello ,

after patching my zen kernel with this patch:

kernelOfTruth wrote:
zcache + fixes + make btrfs work and tweaks & improvements to zram (included in 2.6.39)

to be applied on top of 2.6.38.3-zen*

Enjoy ! :)

to enable it you need to append zcache to your kernel in grub.conf, lilo.conf,

i can no longer use zram because zcache need zram not in module form in order to compile
and zram need to be in module form in order to work with more than one zram devices.

do you have any hint in order to have zcache and zram compiled and working?

thanks

there are some fixes for suspend in 2.6.38.5, just merged in master: I don't know if they will get rid of your specific problem but I think latest zen patch (applies to 2.6.38 ) is worth a try ;)

Is there any chance to get zen-unstable with latest git? Or is zen-unstable inactive?

did that now. behavior changes but we still have a hanging system. i can now see switch to console before sleep, then on resume instead of completely black screen, that console screen will be displayed, but the laptop does not respond to any input. from http://lwn.net/Articles/441072/ it looks like at least this affects this behaviour:

Code:

Dave Airlie (1):
      drm: select FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_PRIMARY if we have FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE

pm-suspend.log, nothing special i can see. nothing about resuming though, so it probably hangs before that.
Code:

Initial commandline parameters:
Blacklisting 01grub.
Blacklisting 55NetworkManager.
Blacklisting 90clock.

ive checked out zen-stable.git now and identified that going from 2.6.38.2 -> .3 is where resume stops working. proceeding to bisect.

edit: my first ever bisect has been a success. culprit is acer-wmi commit 88210a07190401c7f5293a8c9eb26c693536bd1b acer-wmi: does not set persistence state by rfkill_init_sw_state

which is too fricking bad since it was actually useful. hopefully it'll get fixed up. proceeding to file on b.k.o. ... https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34682

Has anyone successfully got fglrx to run on this (or anything from ~arch in the last 3 months, for that matter)? I've done all the eselect/don't-load-radeon.ko stuff correctly but it still gives me that black screen+100% cpu bug other people seem to have. If I kill -9 X and try it a second time, the whole machine locks up.

Last few lines of Xorg.log go like this:
Code:
(II) fglrx(0): UVD feature is enabled(II) fglrx(0):
(II) fglrx(0): Enable composite support successfully
(II) fglrx(0): X context handle = 0x1
(II) fglrx(0): [DRI] installation complete
(==) fglrx(0): Silken mouse enabled
(==) fglrx(0): Using HW cursor of display infrastructure!
(II) fglrx(0): Disabling in-server RandR and enabling in-driver RandR 1.2.

edit: I can ssh in and run `DISPLAY=:0 glxgears` and xrandr output is correct, it seems like just the screen stays black.

hi fellas, tnx a lot for master-2.6.39 :)

I know it's work in progress but curiosity is prevailing so tried a build: just to let you know I had to revert this commit and this other.
also, I think, block/cfq-iosched.c is missing the include of blk-cgroup.h

EDIT: at boot, after having loaded the kernel there's no more output (but the system keeps bootstrapping): I'll try to have a look later via ssh and report back.
EDIT-AGAIN: seems a problem I spotted also in the past with framebuffer -here not used-, related to my nvidia SLI double board setup: no console output, but all ok if I switch to graphical init; btw, vanilla 2.6.39 with ck and bfq seems not to show this behaviour.

I had enough of zen -- it has too many bugs to be addressed. Thus I use vanilla + patches that I really need.
