Hi guys

Yesterday I updated my system and, since then, all 32-bit application have stopped working.
When I try to run it, my shell answer "no such file or directory" but file exists and has correct permission.

My kernel has 32-bit support enabled and I have also installed emul-linux-x86 library.

I also tried "emerge -e system && emerge -e world " without results.

For Example:

Code:

ls -l /opt/firefox/firefox-bin
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 44712  3 mar 12.33 /opt/firefox/firefox-bin

file /opt/firefox/firefox-bin
/opt/firefox/firefox-bin: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped

stat /opt/firefox/firefox-bin

Dim.: 44712           Blocchi: 88         Blocco di IO: 4096   file regolare

All 64-bit application work fine

Can Someone help me understand the problem?

My kernel version is
"Linux baccoJ 2.6.34-gentoo-r6 #4 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 9 23:24:42 CET 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux"

My Profile:
"default/linux/amd64/10.0"

Thanks in advance to all
Have a nice Day (Best of my :) )

Same problem here, after the last sync 32bit binaries no longer works.
I tried to install prebuild gcc glibc and binutils, but the problem is still unsolved.

I got the same problem after world update yesterday. glibc was upgraded to 2.11.3, and now no 32 bit application works.
For example I'm using firefox-bin 32 bit. I get "No such file or directory" when I try to run it. Same happens with skype, Adobe reader, and other 32 bit apps.
Code:
$ /opt/firefox/firefox-bin
bash: /opt/firefox/firefox-bin: No such file or directory

$ strace /opt/firefox/firefox-bin
execve("/opt/firefox/firefox-bin", ["/opt/firefox/firefox-bin"], [/* 67 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
dup(2)                                  = 3
fcntl(3, F_GETFL)                       = 0x8002 (flags O_RDWR|O_LARGEFILE)
fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0600, st_rdev=makedev(136, 4), ...}) = 0
mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7feb893e4000
lseek(3, 0, SEEK_CUR)                   = -1 ESPIPE (Illegal seek)
write(3, "strace: exec: No such file or di"..., 40strace: exec: No such file or directory
) = 40
close(3)                                = 0
munmap(0x7feb893e4000, 4096)            = 0
exit_group(1)                           = ?

multilib use flag is enabled.

By the way, this thread appears to be describing the same problem.

re-emerging glibc after re-linking them solved it for me.

I can confirm. I've solved too.

Thanks Guys. :)

Reemerging didn't do anything for me either. Downgrading glibc does not seem a viable option, any other ideas?

Never mind, got it working. I forgot to update the tree before reemerging glibc (as explained in this bugreport)

Ok It works. I didn't realized that my /lib was a real directory, not a link (I think it's because I reinstalled kernel modules after the original link has disappeared ), so I had to merge it with /lib64, remove it and then link with "ln -s /lib64/ /lib"

Thank you guys! :D

Same problem happened here. Looks like many people are gonna experience this.

Anyway why did the /lib link was changed for a directory? Something on the last update seens to have done that automatically, and so the problem started up.

Well I relinked the /lib link, recompiled glibc and still nothing works. Very annoying since I'm at the job and really have to access pdf files with acrobat.

[EDIT]: Running an emerge --sync before rebuilding glibc makes it work.

Same here too. I found that I had the same issue as clostry. My /lib symlink was a directory and had new kernel modules in it. I did the same as him and merged to contents into /lib64, removed /lib and created a new symlink. Then did an "emerge --sync" followed by reinstalling glibc. Sorted.

I have to say this could potentially cause a lot of problems for users. Is there any news on why this happened? Bug that's been fixed or something we need to be aware of?

aww, now this was really a painful one. Wasted something like 5 hours on this because on my system it hit the self-extractor of the 32bit java package. And that thing is some pain in the ass to debug. Try editing that stupid 80 MB bash-script-elf-executable chimera when vim insists on adding a newline at the end when you save, which of course destroys the checksum. Add to that a non-hardened chroot on a hardened server and you find yourself chasing after all kinds of phantom bugs, looking entirely in the wrong direction.

Had the same problem. re-emerging glibc fixed it. However, I think that glibc should have been revbumped to avoid digging to google like crazy trying to find out what broke
