You're probably missing a few emul-linux-x86 packages if you're on 64 bit, and you probably want to grab the other steam deps as well, otherwise you'll just get more errors as you go along. Go to the "howto" on this page.

I am checking out that HOWTO: right now.
I was going through my system and realized that I have been using the Accept Keyword=~AMD64 globally in make.conf which is probably the root of my issues with Wine (among other things) I'm going through the process of p.k. -"ing" my way back to stable, though I assume it will be a long process.
I'm gonna mark this one closed as the issue is clearly my unfamiliarity with Gentoo and how powerful portage is.
