i'm not really a newb but i'm not sure where else to post this so here it goes.

i never had a problem with mandrake in getting my mouse to work, but since i've put gentoo installed i cant get it to work, i'm pretty sure theres support in the kernel, but there isnt a device for it anywhere in /dev i've got devfs in so thats not a problem, usb is working, i've got my camera and xawtv up and running to test that, and i know the mouse is good i put it on a windows box and tried it, works great. any ideas?

Do you have input core support in your kernel? Are you using the USB Mouse driver or the full USB HID driver?

Does it work when you are booted from the install CD? If so, you could try comparing your kernel configuration with the one used to build the kernel on the install CD.

Well, one way would be to boot from the install CD, mount your partitions by hand under /mnt somewhere, and then chroot to the root partition on your HD. Then you should effectively be in your normal system, but running the install CD kernel. You should then be able to start X or gpm or try doing whatever it is you want to do with the mouse.

and while i'm here i might as well ask this too.
could having a ps2 mouse also be messing up the kernel. i'm going to try changing some stuff regarding usb mice and dos in bios too, it just hit me that they could possibly pose an issue

That's a good pointer. Note that some people had better luck with /dev/usbmouse than /dev/input/mice, though.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this not only fixed the problems with my mouse, that doc about setting up the mouse from manuchao ought to be placed sticky in here since i think that i might not be the only one to have this problem, had to compile it into the kernel though, problems with modules but either way it works!!!!!!
