PostPosted: Mon Jan 17, 2011 9:40 pm    Post subject: Canon UFRII all-in-one laser printer driver won't compile. Reply with quote

Hi,

This is a repost because the other forum is probably not watched by a lot of developers.

I just downloaded the Canon UFRII driver for Linux from here: http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010783.asp This is a newer driver version than any other posts on this forum.

I'm trying to compile and it errors. Not that familiar with make or libtool, so I would like to ask some help.

There is an ebuild from an earlier post, I thought maybe if I can get this to work I could update that and maybe post the ebuild for everyone else to use.

I went to UK/Sources/cndrvcups-lb-2.20 and typed 'allgen.sh' per the README. The whole output isn't that big, so I'll post the whole thing:

Yes, I have automake installed but it seems to ignore that. I read the README in both driver directories, the first directory (common) worked fine. The second one gives problems.
Code:

*  sys-devel/automake
      Latest version available: 1.11.1
      Latest version installed: 1.11.1
      Size of files: 1,041 kB
      Homepage:      http://sources.redhat.com/automake/
Description:   Used to generate Makefile.in from Makefile.am
      License:       GPL-2

*  sys-devel/automake-wrapper
      Latest version available: 4
      Latest version installed: 4
      Size of files: 0 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.gentoo.org/
Description:   wrapper for automake to manage multiple automake versions
      License:       GPL-2

I wondered if maybe since they specify 1.3 and it's 1.11 maybe this driver is too old? But it was only released this year.

To make myself more clear, I have ALL of the dependencies listed in the README installed. They are much higher versions than the requirements, I'm running the stable tree but I think Gentoo's software is a bit greener than the other distros this already works on.

I have experience with OSS software, but it tends to be grails/java rather than linux-native.

Sorry, this is my first attempt at making an ebuild of any sort, I will probably be a bit higher maintenance than we would all like :(

I will try to RTFM as much as possible, just need a nudge in the right direction here.

Actually, the problem is exactly that they are much higher.
Due to the way automake wrapper works, it doesn't work well for you.
Try running with Want_AUTOMAKE=1.11 - as long as automake files are compatible, it should help.

BTW, quite messy build system and they still use libglade.

The place where it fails is this statement:

(automake --version) < /dev/null > /dev/null 2>&1 || {
echo
echo "**Error**: You must have \`automake' installed."
echo "Get ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/automake-1.3.tar.gz"
echo "(or a newer version if it is available)"
DIE=1
NO_AUTOMAKE=yes
}

I don't know what exactly they're trying to do with that line, when you pipe to /dev/null on my system there is no more output. The way I read that, if it returns a nonzero result it dies.

Sorry, I made a typo - it's WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.11.

Exactly. They run automake --version and discard any output that might be generated, including the subshell printing that it cannot find automake. If automake was found and understood the option --version, it should exit 0. If the child exits non-zero, either because automake was not found or the file found did not understand --version, then the error message is printed.

Ya, but it DOES understand --version. It prints a reasonable version string when you type --version, and an error if you run it with no arguments and there are no files it knows.

The WANT_AUTOMAKE thing worked, now it's having problems with something else.

The thing doesn't build yet but I'm a lot further. Looking through there, its got some warnings that seem to tell me what the error is about.

Near the top, I see this:

How many source files are provided and how many outputs is it supposed to produce? This build system has enough problems that it might be faster to write a replacement if the project is not large.

OK, here it is. Not including files with no extension:

5 .0
1 .1
2 .BIN
122 .DAT
36 .ICC
19 .am
26 .c
1 .glade
47 .h
32 .in
2 .in~
1 .la
6 .m4
1 .pl
5 .po
3 .postinst
3 .postrm
1 .pot
202 .ppd
199 .res
10 .sh
1 .so
1 .spec
6 .xml

Frankly it looks like almost no source files, it's all printer definitions.

Well, I'll tell you something - just for the kicks, I've downloaded the tarball.
Most of it didn't built for me, as I didn't have libbuftool, but I did get through configure phase...
though I didn't run that script, just 'autoreconf -f --install' in every dir with a configure.{in,ac} - only place were I needed more
was/were the dirs were the script required glib-gettextize.

Probably the usual happened - libtool macro got updated, but not ltmain.sh scripts.

I did that. It seems to have worked without error.

Now what?

I am helpless like a kitten in a paper bag.

If you have it working by hand, then it is time to record your work in an ebuild so that it is repeatable and can be managed by Portage. Your first post in the thread mentions an older ebuild, so we can use that as a starting point. Could you post that, including any changes you have made to it, and a record of all the commands you need to run starting from unpacking the source up through where you would run make install, including any arguments you might need to pass to make install? Given that, we can adjust the ebuild to include those commands at the right phases.

Only thing is, I don't know if it works. Did I install it by doing all that?

Don't see any evidence that it is installed. I tried restarting cupsd, the drivers don't appear to be available.

I cannot say for sure whether you installed it until you tell us exactly what commands you have run, what their output was, and whether or not you ran them as root. From your terse messages, I think you have not yet installed it.

I did what VoidMage said. First I did it as me, then as root, then I restarted cupsd. When I tried to make a new printer, only the old driver was available and that one doesn't work for me.

I found everywhere where there was a configure.in or configure.ac, and ran autoreconf -f --install in that directory. Basically top down, as the find command listed them out.

The only thing, I never saw anything telling me to run glib-gettextize.

I'm pretty positive I didn't do something necessary, or did it wrong.

Finally got Ubuntu 12.04 (amd64) printing to a Canon UFRII printer.  The procedure is somewhat less than intuitive.

  • Run the following commands which are necessary to support the binary blobs included in the driver files:
    Code:

    ln -s lib /usr/lib64
    apt-get install ia32-libs

  • Visit the Canon-Australia support site and download the most recent drivers, currently Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V250_uk_EN.tar.gz.
  • Unpack the file.
  • In the Sources directory, unpack the cndrvcups-common-2.50-1.tar.gz and cndrvcups-lb-2.50-1.tar.gz files.
  • Edit the debian/control files and change all instances of "Architecture: i386" to "Architecture: i386 amd64".
  • Edit the debian/rules files and uncomment the "dh_makeshlibs" lines.
  • Edit the cndrvcups-lb-2.50/allgen.sh file and delete all instances of "--enable-static", "--disable-static", "--enable-shared", and "--disable-shared" options.
  • Run the following commands from the Sources directory to build and install the driver software:
    Code:

    cd cndrvcups-common-2.50cndrv
    debuild binary
    cd ..
    dpkg -i cndrvcups-common_2.50-1_amd64.deb
    cd cndrvcups-lb-2.50
    debuild binary
    cd ..
    dpkg -i cndrvcups-lipslx_2.50-1_amd64.deb cndrvcups-ufr2-uk_2.50-1_amd64.deb cups-ufr2-us_2.50-1_amd64.deb

Alternatively, you can just run the shellscript I attached to the following:

Greetings,

A quick question with regards to your script: Where (e.g. what package) can we find debuild in the portage tree or any overlay for use with your script?

I have already installed dpkg, debianutils and debhelper and I still don't have debuild available.

I'm trying to get printing going to a Canon imageCLASS MF7470. I have gotten the source code compiled and installed (using all the techniques described in this thread; I used "WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.11 autoreconf -f --install" in each directory with a configure.[in,ac], updated the debian/control file with "amd64", uncommented the "dh_makeshlibs" line in debian/rules file and deleted all instances of "--enable-static", "--disable-static", "--enable-shared", and "--disable-shared" in the allgen.sh script), but any of the drivers I use from the UFRII package leaves me with a printout that only says:
Canon imageCLASS MF7470 wrote:
**** Unable to open initial device, quitting.

I'm pretty sure that something likely got missed, skipped or changed from the steps I took to get their code to compile, and would appreciate any help in getting this going.

TIA.

Sorry; the script assumes a debian-based distro. For Gentoo, you can roll your own, as usual.

On Debian, debuild is part of the devscripts package.

Okay,

Thanks for the prompt response.

Still not seeing where the issue actually lies yet, but I just pulled the full debug output from trying to do a print of a CUPS test page, so I will see if I can find what device or file it thinks it's missing.

Until then, I will go back to the Canon imageRunner 7105 foomatic/pxlmono driver that will allow me to print one copy of one job at a time.

Interesting to note: When searching Google for "linux CUPS 'unable to open initial device'", the two manufacturers that come up are the two that have both put out their own driver code; HP & Canon. Unfortunately for me, HP seems to exhibit the behavior more often than Canon. :P

I'll let you know what I find.

Greetings,

I know it's been a while since there was any activity on this thread, but I had to revisit this issue again and am happy to report that thanks to pacho and the folks down at support-au.canon.com.au, we have working ebuilds for these drivers... :D

Code:
 ~ # emerge -s cndrvcups

Thank you all for your hard work on this one, because, as you can see above, there were a few of us going crazy trying to do the building of the source and/or hack the binaries into place!

For these, I just had to do the keyword entry and emerge and it went smoothly... Ran the test print and it looks *great*!!!

Thanks again!
