I'm not sure if this is the right place to post. I've got conky working mostly ok. It displays everything I'd expect it to. However, when I use a shortcut key to open up a terminal, conky goes from being transparent to having the same color background as my windows as set in "Appearance Preferences". This also happens if I use the shortcut keys to change desktops. No other functionality in conky seems to change. I'm running gnome but not compiz. I have the terminals set to be somewhat transparent. I notice that when I close a terminal window, the window itself shows that same color background before closing, so I wonder if the behavior in conky is related. Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this behavior?

This is the code I have in my .conkyrc:
Code:
background yes
font Snap.se:size=7
xftfont Snap.se:size=7
use_xft yes
xftalpha 0.1
update_interval 1.0
total_run_times 0
own_window yes
own_window_type override
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
double_buffer yes
draw_shades yes
draw_outline no
draw_borders no
draw_graph_borders no
minimum_size 206 5
maximum_width 216
default_color ffffff
default_shade_color 000000
default_outline_color 000000
alignment top_right
gap_x 6
gap_y 18
no_buffers yes
cpu_avg_samples 2
override_utf8_locale no
uppercase no # set to yes if you want all text to be in uppercase
use_spacer none

Thank you.

I don't use conky to monitor temp but I did play around with it to make sure it works. Because of the i2c_nforce2 I'm assuming thats an nforce2 chipset motherboard. Here's are my lsmod info:
Code:
lsmod | grep -v snd
Module                  Size  Used by
vfat                   10660  0
fat                    47776  1 vfat

agpgart                28308  2 nvidia,nvidia_agp
i2c_nforce2             6372  0
i2c_core               19732  2 nvidia,i2c_nforce2
firewire_ohci          22824  0
8250_pnp               14148  0
8250                   20516  1 8250_pnp

ehci_hcd               34932  0

The "nvidia" is there because of the graphics card, not the nforce2 chipset.
Code:
cd /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0 && ls -al
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root    0 2010-03-31 20:50 ./

Thank you.

Using 'own_window_type panel' instead of 'own_window_type override' solved it for me. I got the same error after upgrading to conky-1.8.0. The problem went away when I tried the new 'own_window_argb_visual', but that brough its own niggles with it, as conky would always be on top.

Ola

I tried conky several months ago when I installed gentoo, but I had this same problem as now.
Back than I did not have the time for 'beauty' features,
but now I am determined to set it up because I need to have some system monitoring...
and all roads lead to conky

here is the problem, as I make my .conkyrc (well I copy the basic one) It works quite well
... until I click on desktop.
I can click on menu and open some app, it still works, but as I click on desktop it goes away.

I have xfce desktop, I have dual core laptop, I have gentoo picture set as background and I have two cats.
I am newbie and I do not know what to post, but I can post everything you guys need to help me out.

Here is video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGwZK5rcq1w

Also, if I want to have weather, should I emerge conky with those weather use-flags?
(I already am the member od weather.com site and I do have that key)

Thank you

In the video you are running conky with the default config which is /etc/conky/conky.conf.
The behaviour you are describing is the normal behaviour of the default config.

You can launch conky with your own config by passing the -c and the path to your config.
Code:

% conky -c ~/.conky

Inspiration for your personal config can be found here.

Ola

Mr Sande, that worked nicely, thank you!
I am a bit dissapointed, knowing now, that I could all this time have the Conky...

But now it is up and running.

However I do have a couple more questions to make my Conky perfect:
(I will post files at the end of the thread)

First:
Weather, I can not get those icons to work. How do I go about that?
and second, I do not have ° sign but instead I have A° sign, so I am wondering how to remove that A infront of the ° sign?

Second:
Temperature. I do get some temperature, but I do not know which is which...
How can I determinate which temperature is for what?

Third:
Fans. How do I get them?

I did google, but as a newbie I am having hard time to get the right answer.
I tried out every options I found in conky docs for fan anf temperature...
Also, not being the native English speaker, I do not understand a lot of that.
It seems it is specific for each computer, I have laptop compaq 6820s.

conkyrc:
Code:
# Conky configuration
background yes
out_to_console no
update_interval 2
total_run_times 0
own_window yes
own_window_type normal
own_window_transparent yes

This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need
to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. It is generally safe
and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions,
unless you know what you're doing.

Some south bridges, CPUs or memory controllers contain embedded sensors.
Do you want to scan for them? This is totally safe. (YES/no): y
Silicon Integrated Systems SIS5595...                       No
VIA VT82C686 Integrated Sensors...                          No
VIA VT8231 Integrated Sensors...                            No
AMD K8 thermal sensors...                                   No
AMD Family 10h thermal sensors...                           No
AMD Family 11h thermal sensors...                           No
Intel Core family thermal sensor...                         Success!
    (driver `coretemp')
Intel Atom thermal sensor...                                No
Intel AMB FB-DIMM thermal sensor...                         No
VIA C7 thermal sensor...                                    No
VIA Nano thermal sensor...                                  No

Some Super I/O chips contain embedded sensors. We have to write to
standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe.
Do you want to scan for Super I/O sensors? (YES/no): y
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x2e/0x2f
Trying family `National Semiconductor'...                   No
Trying family `SMSC'...                                     Yes
Found unknown chip with ID 0x3600
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x4e/0x4f
Trying family `National Semiconductor'...                   No
Trying family `SMSC'...                                     No
Trying family `VIA/Winbond/Nuvoton/Fintek'...               No
Trying family `ITE'...                                      No

Some hardware monitoring chips are accessible through the ISA I/O ports.
We have to write to arbitrary I/O ports to probe them. This is usually
safe though. Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any
ISA slots! Do you want to scan the ISA I/O ports? (YES/no): y
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM78' at 0x290...       No
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM79' at 0x290...       No
Probing for `Winbond W83781D' at 0x290...                   No
Probing for `Winbond W83782D' at 0x290...                   No

Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware
monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works
reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble
on some systems.
Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no): y
Sorry, no supported PCI bus adapters found.
FATAL: Module i2c_dev not found.
Failed to load module i2c-dev.

Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done.
Just press ENTER to continue:

Driver `coretemp':
  * Chip `Intel Core family thermal sensor' (confidence: 9)

Warning: the required module coretemp is not currently installed
on your system. If it is built into the kernel then it's OK.
Otherwise, check http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices for
driver availability.

No modules to load, skipping modules configuration.

Thank you

First
I cant help you with the weather stuff, because I have never used it.
I think you have to use 'iconv' around your whole weather forecast to get rid of the A.

Second
I dont know how to find out which temperature is which, all I use is the CPU and hard-drive temperatures.

Third
I dont think most modern laptops gives you that information. At least mine doesn't.

If you want your conky to look a little "nicer" you can add
Code:

use_xft yes
xftfont Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:size=9

to your config. Feel free to replace the Bitstream font with whichever font you like best :)

Here is one of my configs.
Code:

# FONT
use_xft yes
xftfont Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:size=9

Hello there,
I had some problems with updating gentoo, but now I am back and running, kheh...

Here is the picture:
http://www.shrani.si/f/35/FO/3rmthlHG/conky.png

As you can see, I managed to get "weather icons" it was in first part of conkyrc that needed modifying, yes, the xft was needed.

As for temperature and fans goes,
I manage to do it with acpitool command,
than greping relevant temperatures,
I sure hope I got the right temperatures and fans at right places to display in conky, kheh...

I also added hard disk temperature,
but hddtemp was not working without root privilages,
so I had to install netcat to get the output and than display it in conky.

and here is my .conkyrc:
Code:
use_xft yes
xftfont Monospace:size=8
background yes
out_to_console no
update_interval 2
total_run_times 0
own_window yes
own_window_type normal
own_window_transparent yes

Hi, in the own_window_hints setting should be the sticky option to make conky appear in all desktops. Here is mine:
Code:
...
own_window_class Conky
own_window yes
own_window_colour 000000
own_window_type normal
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_argb_value 0
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
...
