|
|
i just installed gentoo 1.2 yesterday. the only problem i've had with it so far is that kde runs really really slow.. the apps take forever to load, i mean.. actually, all c++ apps take too long to load..
it was really zippy on mandrake.. i think it has something to do with c++ library linking or something.. mandrake must have added some patches to their distro or something to speed it up..
anyone know how i can speed it up in gentoo? do i need to upgrade some of my packages? if so, what version numbers will work? |

Emerging fluxbox makes KDE apps starting faster? What are you smoking? |

I run fluxbox, but I emerged KDE so that I can run all those nifty K-apps, konqueror, kedit, kportagemaster, etc..
They just make it easier to do things, and if I ever want to actually use KDE, I always have that option. |

We've had our window manager/desktop environment war already, folks. No need to have another one.
Topic at hand is making KDE faster.

I saw the config options --disable-debug --enable-final --enable-fast-malloc=full recommended for compiling kde. As far I can till --disable-debug is added as long as emerge doesn't detect the $DEBUG variable but --enable-fast-malloc=full which apparently speeds things up isn't in eclass/kde.eclass.
I have added the option in my kde.eclass, and when I finish recompiling my system for gcc 3.2 will try it out. |
