Failed vmware-workstation-7.1.3.324285 emerge [SOLVED]

Post by VinceDodge6174 » Tue Jan 11, 2011 8:45 pm

I'm trying to install vmware-workstation on my laptop because there is still about 5% that I haven't found a satisfactory substitute or work around for in my 'all windoze' corporate environment.

I signed up for the free 30 day trial, and downloaded the 32-bit linux host binary that they offered me (VMware-Workstation-Full-7.1.3-324285.i386.bundle).

I'm using the vmware overlay since they had an ebuild that matched the version of the binary I downloaded (app-emulation/vmware-workstation-7.1.3.324285).

I copied the binary file to /usr/portage/distfiles/ but the emerge still fails as follows:
!!! app-emulation/vmware-workstation-7.1.3.324285 has fetch restriction turned on.
!!! This probably means that this ebuild's files must be downloaded
!!! manually. See the comments in the ebuild for more information.

* Fetch failed for 'app-emulation/vmware-workstation-7.1.3.324285', Log file:
* '/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/vmware-workstation-7.1.3.324285/temp/build.log'
* Please download VMware-Workstation-7.1.3-324285.i386.bundle
* from http://www.vmware.com/products/workstation/
* and place it in /usr/portage/distfiles

I don't know if its a problem that the name of the file the ebuild refers to (VMware-Workstation-7.1.3-324285.i386.bundle) is different than the name of the file that is provided by VMware (VMware-Workstation-Full-7.1.3-324285.i386.bundle). I tried changing it just to see, and of course it then fails the checksum.

The system has a fresh sync, update, and revdep-rebuild last night, and has been running error free.[/i][/b]
Any help would be appreciated.

They should offer you 4 versions of the binary, two 32-bit and two 64-bit. The Full version you downloaded includes vmware tools. There is no need to download the full version since they allow you to download the tools separately now. Try going back to the vmware website and download the regular 32-bit bundle, it should have a smaller file size.

Exactly...I had this same problem...the 'full' version doesn't work. You need the one without 'full' in the name (it's smaller).

Thank you very much platojones and rtomek!! vmware-workstation is compiling as i write this.

For the record, in case anyone else is watching, when I signed up for the free trial, I wasn't given the choice of packages with or without tools. The only files on the download page was for a Windows host, a 32bit linux host with tools, and a 64bit linux host with tools.

However, after logging back in with the name and password I set up for the trial, and searching around for a while, I was able to find a link that eventually got me to a download page http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/desk ... tation/7_0

From there I was able to get to the 4 versions of the binary that rtomek referred to.

I'm going to finish the install and try running it, but if all goes well I will come back and mark this as "Solved".

Thanks again :)
