yeah I yahoo, but mostly I google a lot
(and if these forums were half as searchable as google I would mostly gentoo)
My only hope is that when the final gcc3.2 comes out(ie. gentoo 1.4 full) I can make the upgrade with starting from scratch.....
my knowledge of computers is vast and deep, sufficiently deep that I sometimes fall in way over my head and must spend many a sleepless night to find my way out again...

Not much. By now she's used to me pulling a houdini from time to time. I dont bother trying to come up with excuses anymore either...
"Umm... honey? I'm not going to be able to go see 'Evita' tonight. Why? ummm... well... I have some code I have to write.... very important code.... umm... code that will save the planet from imminent destruction - and it can't wait. Yes, I'm dissapointed too...." |
Wow, thanks for that one... I'll use it the next time my gf wants me to watch some Danielle Steel drama with her... |

So, this is a little off-topic, but still mostly on...what are all the steps involved in updating gcc on a Gentoo system? emerging the new gcc, obviously...then setting it as your default compiler...then what command to re-compile everything? Is 'emerge world' sufficient? Or...are there more gotchas to it than that? (Assuming, for the moment, that everything will compile properly =P)

The basic way to recompile a system is to emerge rsync and then emerge -e world. You can emerge gcc and set it as your default compiler between those two steps and it should work. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Nice, but there is a basic problem with the basic way.
If emerge fails at the 900 ebuild of 1000, how do you resume?
Yeah, if you do emerge -e world again, you will start from 0 again (not nice).
We have to solve it and we have only a few days, cause gcc3.2 is very near. _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |
