Good Morning,

I need assistance please to fromat my SATA3 drives with fdisk.
The output I get from fdisk is
Code:
 # fdisk /dev/sda

Unable to open /dev/sda

Could it be a driver issue? Something about 3511 maybe.

Last weeks SysrescueCD doesn't do it.
Can't find anything on Google.

Appreciate it, because this baby has got to get out on a test ride.

well, mike, i suppose it's more a problem with controller driver (or controller driver version that might not implement sata3 yet)

or just udev failing to build proper symlink,
check cat /proc/scsi/scsi for presence.

should gave more info about the controller in use.

Thanks krinn,

Well not sure, for some reason Bios does not detect sata drives.

MB is P7P55D-ELX

SATA controller: JMicron Technology Corp. JMB361 AHCI/IDE
Kernel driver in use: ahci
Code:

well, if the bios doesn't detect the drive, maybe the drive is connected to the add-on controller (the jmicron one, vs the "native/internal" intel one)
so controller bios should detect it and pass it to mb bios: but if that controller doesn't handle sata3, it won't detect it.
like for sata2 drive, i'm not sure, but you might have a jumper for compatibility mode on the drive if you want run it on sata2

http://www.jmicron.com/JMB361.html

edit: look like this is wrong: if sata3 drive don't have that jumper, you should plug it to the intel controller that is able to handle sata3 drives

edit : http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=9i872VNaAILRp8bS&templete=2
Quote:
Supporting next-generation Serial ATA (SATA) storage interface with onboard Marvell® controller, this motherboard delivers up to 6.0Gbps data transfer rates

looks like from there that the controller for sata3 is provide by marvell, so you might have 3 controllers on that board, but 1 only for sata3 (that will make a shitload of hdds :D )

Well krinn I got the slower sata3 working and detected, not the 6Gps yet.

I'm reading the Asus User Guide now for more information.
Of course all the BIOS settings like Marvell Smart Monitor etc... are at Auto for now.

This is fun, but I must rest now.

Will report back asap.

Thanks again my friend. :)

Well it really looks like linux is just not Sata3 ready yet.
So we`ll have to wait a while still.
Anyhow 3Gbps is still pretty fast I think, so this baby is going online tomorrow.

Thanks for your assistance people.

God bless. :)

you're sure ? i'm a bit surprise, generally drivers almost came out before the product for this kind of thing

did you check lspci -k for the marvell controller (who knows might gave an answer :D )

lspci -k? Yep, done that. Nada.

Look at Google -> Linux & Sata3. Again nada.

I am surprised as well krinn, that linux would be so behind the 8 ball on this, maybe I'm wrong about it.

Of course I shall continue looking for any information concerning this and of course post anything relevant.

It may even be worth a shot downloading, burning and booting today`s SysrescueCD just in case.

Not to mention that somebody on the Gentoo Forums would know stuff about it for sure - even if it just barely existed.

Otherwise I`m at a loss here, but something has got to turn up sooner or later.

Until next time my friend and thanks.:)

Doesn't the controller support AHCI?

EDIT: Even says AHCI in the name. So it should work with AHCI then. Your problem is elsewhere?

EDIT2: looking at the kernel source,

drivers/ata/libata-core.c

Code:

static const char *sata_spd_string(unsigned int spd)
{
        static const char * const spd_str[] = {
                "1.5 Gbps",
                "3.0 Gbps",
                "6.0 Gbps",
        };

        if (spd == 0 || (spd - 1) >= ARRAY_SIZE(spd_str))
                return "<unknown>";
        return spd_str[spd - 1];
}

So it can already display 1.5 / 3.0 / 6.0 Gbps links in dmesg - I haven't read deeper into the source code but I strongly suspect that means that 6Gbps SATA should be supported already...

Actually no, the JMicron controller is for the 1-port eSATA and PATA ports on the board (See: JMB361).
Your SATA3 controller is actually, according to Asus' site && motherboard manual:
Quote:

Marvell® PCIe SATA 6Gb/s controller:
- 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (Gray)
...
Marvell 9123 Controller

Taking a look in my 2.6.33-r2 (gentoo-sources) kernel nothing obvious, regarding drivers/support, for that particular chipset popped out at me. I half-wonder if the current Marvell SATA driver actually does support the 91xx series controllers and that info just hasn't been updated in the kernel help page....

But anyways - try the in-kernel driver out first, or perhaps do a bit of extra searching in other kernel sources (perhaps >2.6.34 has the driver?), and see if that works or not. A bit of Googling returned some RedHat/Fedora and Ubuntu users working with the 88SE9123 controller already, so I have to assume that kernel support is definitely there.

Maybe it will be an another Jmicron episode or saga back when the Gentoo minimal 2006.0 was out.

Thanks guys,

Hielvc, I also have a similar dmesg AHCI line

Yes it's the Marvel 9123 that I have, a firmware release is imminent but constantly being delayed.

Hope it works, don't know how though, because the bios doesn't even recognize the sata3 connectors.
Maybe some cool magic. :)

So waiting patiently.

Cheers,

MH

I'm using something in the BIOS called IO-levelup which is supposed to give me 5GBPS in SATA2 on this system, so I'm no longer concerned that my hardware isn't being exploited to it's full potential.

Thanks all for your input and assistance. :)

Have a good one,

MH

Hi Hielvc, I'm planning on getting this board. Did you have any problem during installation, drivers etc.
What video driver is the on board video using?
