When I tried to emerge OpenOffice 1.0.0 emerge operation broke up, telling me I had to install gcc 3.0.4 or higher. At that time I had installed 2.95.3-r7 so I tried to emerge gcc 3.1.1 but this emerge broke up either with this error:

Code:

/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.1.1/temp/cclM73Qb.s: Assembler messages:
/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.1.1/temp/cclM73Qb.s:21523: Error: unknown pseudo-op: `.jyte'
make[2]: *** [optabs.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.1.1/work/build/gcc'
make[1]: *** [stage3_build] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.1.1/work/build/gcc'
make: *** [bootstrap-lean] Error 2

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 29, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

!!! emerge aborting on  /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-3.1.1.ebuild .

.jyte? That should be .byte

b = 2
j = 10
The difference is 8.

That means your HW has flipped a bit... are you OC'ing? Aggressive RAM settings? Please try out MemTest86.
