Gentoo.org looks very old. Most of us would agree that it needs to be redesigned.
In this thread I would like to gather ideas form all Gentoo users on how you would like the site to be improved, and how to make this happen.
What do you think about a redesign competition?
(I have created a poll to count the number of users who would like to participate in a gentoo.org redesign competition.)
What are the obstacles?
I beleive if all of us start seriously thinking about the redesign of our[/list] fantastic linux distribution which is Gentoo. We will make this happen.
Please post your opinions, thoughts, plans etc. under this thread. |

Never seen a poll where you have the same choice twice.
Besides it's not the bling in the opening page that counts.
Gerard. _________________ To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo, has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.

There was no single answer option. There is no point of calculating those who don't want to wet their hands and not design a new gentoo.org theme |

This has to be the dumbest poll that I have ever seen _________________ The BIGGER the GOVERNMENT, the smaller the citizen.

denysonique,
Its been done at least twice that I know of and one time there was even some work done towards moving to the new design.
It didn't happen because there were not enough motivated people to carry it through.
If you want it to happen, just do it. You can get the site via anon CVS. Thats the XML source. _________________ Regards,

I guess that is the issue. Moving to another framework might be out of the question.
I still say that gentoo.org in comparison to distros such as Ubuntu is a technical site with a lot of the information targetted at individuals who only want access to the content, not flashy (not meaning Flash) eye-candy. Beyond that, a lot of new users will visit with a text-only browser (before X is built) so it is very important that the site can be read by those browsers (links, lynx, etc).
I propose a mobile site get made so I can access the guide while installing on my phone (an iPhone). Use jQtouch at that |

Tatsh: for now we will focus only on the design, the design can easly be ported to another system at anytime afterwards.

Heh, gotta admit, I though from the title that this would be a poll like, "do you like it? do you not like it?" thread but either way, I think the "no" option would suffice at it would show, accurately or not, the amount of dwellers who do actually like it as it is.
I personally like it as it is and have no urge to go and design a new one.
To me, simple is usually more.
Especially when it comes to a site with a lot of information I want to access quickly and as mentioned, it should be nice to view via Links and such as well.
Anyways, just my thoughts! _________________ Kindest of regardses. |

Its only going to happen if some one/group puts time into making it happen.
Posting here to say 'do it' won't change anything. _________________ Regards,

Do you know if it will be completed? Or is it possible for someone else to try to do this their way? |

I remember the good days when the entire gentoo experience could fit inside a 80x25 vt100 terminal. Usenet news, IRC, FTP. All from GNU Screen and a Happy Hacker Keyboard. An Intel 386 with 128MB ought to be enough for anyone... |

Gotta have a graphical web browser these days. Horizontal-only splitting in screen kinda sucks too. I prefer screen in conjunction with a tiling WM. |

Ormaaj,
For the record, Gentoo is just over 11 years old. We couldn't track down its birthday exactly, even with the founders help.
We did try for the 10th birthday. In the end we decided on 4th October 1999 as that is the registration date of gentoo.org
Gentoo well predates i386 support being dropped by glibc. In fact when that happened we had to write a CHOST upgrade guide for all the users using a i386 CHOST. _________________ Regards,
