Is there still a Gentoo community on the PS3?
I've written some ebuilds for programs using the PS3's SPEs. They'll need an spu toolchain to work.
First: Cell Scaling and Color Conversion in libSDL: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=291960
It doesn't quite work for me, but your mileage may be better.
Second: Mplayer -vo ps3: http://gitorious.org/laconent/ebuilds/trees/master
One of the Ubuntu users adopted spu-medialib and stripped it to just supporting mplayer again.
One needs to checkout and build spu_scaler (http://gitorious.org/laconent/spu_scaler). it will result in a spu_scaler.o. Compress this to mplayer-30099-spu-support.tar.bz2 and dump it in distfiles. The ebuild will take care of it from there.
I'm sure there's a more graceful way to do this, but it works for now. |

I just wonder, wouldn't it be better to just implement SPU accelerated Xv extension for PS3? |

One was written around xorg-server 1.6 or 1.7. It was buggy, but mostly complete. The developer behind it retired once the slim was launched and OtherOS was put out to pasture. Since then, the ABI of the driver has changed and I wouldn't know how to fix it.
The spu_scaler is working however, at least as of the last ebuild I made around July 2010. |

Yes, I guess the absence of users is the biggest problem and a motivation killer. |

I got the xf86-video-spu working with the latest Xorg server ABI, If there is interest I will make it available somwhere.
I do notice it is very buggy though. I run mythtv with it and get smooth reliable video playback but when the OSD comes on screen it flickers badly. I can also only ger Linear or kernel deinterlacing to work. On my main machine I like to use Yadif, it improves the picture alot.
Its a good start and proof it can work well. I wish I knew enough about XV and xorg drivers to get it working 100%.
Cheers

I wouldn't mind seeing what it can do. Does it still rely on the spu-medialib? |

I ended up going with the firmware upgrade and loosing OtherOS.
Fortunately the PS3's security is now in tatters, and yesterday someone released a set of custom firmware tools so I for one am looking forward to getting things back on track they way they should have been left. _________________ "Science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer.
