I have a relatively new Gentoo install. On this machine, I'm noticing a large discrepancy between total size of files and size on disk. For example, one folder has a total size of files = 2.1 GB and a size on disk of 17.3 GB.

Why am I seeing this?

What filemanager and where is it displaying the problem?

Maybe it has something to do with hidden files.

Is this a problem with df reporting higher usage then the actual space being used ie. from a du of the whole disk?
Are you running Raid on this box.
As bjlockie said it could be due to a GUI filemanager not reporting all or only certain file types.
du - h will report correctly so go with that if in doubt.

OK. Now it looks like it's just the pcmanfm GUI incorrectly reporting sizes. Is there a way to get it to report sizes correctly? I didn't see any options for customizing reporting commands in the preferences.
