I'm having problems with logging out of Gnome: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-839123-highlight-.html

and no one seems to know what the problem is and I'm stumped on troubleshooting.

I'm having problems with wine crashing: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-843635-highlight-.html

and no one seems to be having this problem (that I can find by hours of searching).

Is it because I'm on AMD64? Is that a source of many of my problems? I hate to double post things, but I'm getting a little fed-up with these issues. Seems like it would be a simple fix or maybe an 'emerge -eD world' solution, but it's not (because I tried it).

Any help would be muchly appreciated!

Can we see your emerge --info and if there's any messages in your X log?

Have you run revdep-rebuild lately? It's in gentoolkit and it's worth a shot if things don't work well.

Okay, try moving your xorg.conf to a backup and creating one with just the following:

and see if that helps.

Your card is losing it's mind re-finding the monitor over and over, it may be because of one of the settings.

I will try that. I do have dual monitors so that may be the reason for the behaviour. Setting-up dual monitors now is as difficult as setting up X11 10 years ago...

I ran the command 'startx' and I had to kill it (ctrl-c in the VT) because I don't know how to exit out of X-windows (the menu selection 'exit' didn't work).

RadeonHD was the only way I could get my dual monitor set-up properly. I have previously used fglrx and ati-drivers, ref: here and here. I had both drivers suddenly fail on me so I had to switch and RadeonHD seemed to work the best at the time-- I've found dual-monitor setup really really finicky with any driver so when I finally get it to work I don't want to mess with it again. But, maybe it's time again to start from scratch *sigh*, why is it that video drivers and media players always become unmaintained? argh!

Can you recommend a dual-setup reference for the f86-video-ati driver? Will this driver support 3d acceleration?

xf86-video-ati works fine with 2D, 3D and Xv acceleration. To configure a static multi-monitor setup, read this wiki article(applies to Gentoo as well).
