What would you guys think about a Stage 4 ISO with xfree already merged and ready to setup, that way people could just *insert desktop manager here* and go.
.: This only interest me because xfree takes entirely too long to compile on slower systems that I have installed gentoo on. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago.

The more options the merrier, if someone wants to spend his/her time compiling another ISO, Im not going to argue. |

And how about an Alpha version..
I've got a Digital Alpha Server 2100, with 4 Alpha 200Mhz Processors and 1Gb RAM.
I would really like to run Gentoo Linux (or any other linux version) on this system.
I would love to see the compilation on 4 symmetric proc's _________________ All things considerring! I'm considerring to...never mind! |

As rediculous as it may seem, I usually always just dump the stage1 on, and emerge from there.
It gives me a warm and fuzzy |

I'm willing to bet "I'm A Stage 1 Kinda Person" will win, I used to be like that but after over 20 installations on various machines stage 1 seems like a chore instead of *fun*. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

Good point. If I have 20 machines tho, I can probably just make my own CD for what I want.
Whatever the developers deem important enough to dedicate time to is fine with me in this general area. _________________ Those who know what's best for us must rise and save us from ourselves. |

Oh I don't have 20 machines *wishes*, but I have installed gentoo for several people to give them a demonstration of how well linux can work for them and that it can be quite an interesting learning experience.
.: Have gotten many responses during these installs about how long xfree takes to compile. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

XFree compile time is ridiculous.
KDE compile time is much worse.
Take it from someone who just had to wait 24 hours for a P2 400 to compile them both with "-march=i686 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -fforce-addr -funroll-loops -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -malign-functions=4" for optimizations (nothing broken yet )
And yet I'd still use the stage1 iso, just 'cause I'm that kind of crazy bastard.

I agree that the compile time is too long.
However, if I wish to use any special GCC compile flags (like-march=pentium4 -mmmx -msse -msse2 -mfpmath=sse ) you have to compile from the ground up. |

I probably wouldn't use one of these (I like that warm, fuzzy feeling as well), but I'd say it's a good idea (if you want to get up and running fast).
One advantage I'd see is with gcc3. I'm using a 1.2 install as my main install, and I can generally recompile my entire system in about 6 hours (haven't timed it, but that's a pretty decent estimate, I think. I don't have kde or gnome). However, I did a 1.3 install, and I emerge kde and gnome over night, and it took about 8 hours to do those two (and some other little things, like hotkeys and hotplug). I'm pretty sure that's not how slow it normally is.
Also, I'd say that my computer generally compiles xfree in 40 minutes - 1 hour with 2.95, but with 3.2pre, it too, at least 1 hour 40 minutes.
And I'd say in general, gcc3 takes about twice as long to compile stuff for me. So if you're using gcc3, and you could get all the way past X without having to do it yourself, that'd be quite a boon to someone on a slower computer (mine's not too shabby. Athlon TBird 1400 w/ 768 MB memory).
So, yes, this is a good idea. _________________ They don't have a good bathroom to do coke in. |

Compiling on a fast box usually doesn't take too long
and you probably don't want to run X on a slow box =P
So I think stage4 ain't gonna be the most popular.
Cheers!

with 3.2pre, on a 1.53ghz with 256 ram, it took me 63 minutes to compile X and fluxbox. t'wasn't so bad. |

Something in the mannor of half the people using linux use it on 700mhz computers or slower, and xfree compile time on these machines is ungodly slow. Also on a slower machine people tend to use fluxbox or some other light wm that will compile in relatively little time so the only hinderance to setting up gentoo in a decent amount of time is xfree. If your running a dual athlon xp 2100 setup of course you would want to start with stage 1, but if your running something alot more mild like say a 600mhz celeron than stage 4 would be a great timesaver in setting up your machine.
I think a stage 4 iso would be a great asset to gentoo users with slower machines that don't want to spend a great deal of time getting the best linux distribution available up and running graphically.
.: The above ramblings are just my outlook on things since one of my machines is a slow celeron that I don't like spending hours and hours getting gentoo into a usable state on a machine that I really don't care if xfree is *highly optimized* being that there is no opengl/3d activity ever going on with it. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

I installed from stage1 on my mobile celeron 400mhz.
Sure, it was hell, but stage 1 makes me giddy |

I have installed gentoo on a few P2-400's and the compile time is pretty long. I would still say that I will use a stage one install because there's two types of systems where a fully optimized compile really helps. The first are the screaming fast ones that you just want to make unbelievable. The second are the slower ones that can be made to be a little snappier with a little optimization.
That being said, I would still like to see a stage 4 install because I think it would certainly be nice to be able to get up and running faster. Plus, if you really want the optimizations later, you can still re-compile the modules from source. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Ok I knew one of you mods would do that, this is not a suggestion. I am gathering input on a possible future project, this post does not belong in "Gentoo Suggestions". _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |
