Hi all. Today's emerge --sync gave me two main updates: KDE 4.5.1 and Xorg 1.9. The emerge proceeded without issue (apart from an unrelated hard reboot I had to make, so I had to resume the emerge process), and all was good. I rebuild x11-drivers packages, rebooted and got this weird error from xdm:

Quote:
ERROR: xdm needs service(s) xdm-setup
.

In effect, there is no xdm-setup anymore, but why is it gone if it is needed?? What puzzles me even more is that if I open /etc/init.d/xdm it says it depends on localmount and xdm, no mention of xdm-setup whatsoever! How is it deciding it needs xdm-setup to work?

So I thought I'd deal with it later, ran startx and...

Quote:
(EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad no synaptics event device found
(EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8
(EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"

waiting for X server to shut down...

So I thought I'd deal with this later once again, downgraded xorg server to the previous version on ~amd64, rebuilt x11-driver packages, rebooted and... exactly the same errors!!!! :@ This time the /etc/init.d/xdm file does actually depend on xdm-setup, but xdm-setup is still not there??

I also get the same error running startx... I am totally stuck and baffled.

Any ideas anyone???

EDIT: OK I forced a fsck on reboot and the issue is gone. That hard reboot must have done something bad :S

Best regards

I have a similar problem :
ERROR: xdm needs service(s) xdm-setup

but # startx works in my case.
I had to downgrade to xorg-server-1.8.2 to enter directly in kdm.

Optiluca, did you have xorg-server-1.9 working without that error ?

Yes, xorg server 1.9 is functional. The file /etc/init.d/xdm was correct, I just has a filesystem error or something I believe, due to the hard lockup I had during the emerge process. By the sounds of it a new sync should get you up and running :)
