PostPosted: Thu Jan 28, 2010 6:08 pm    Post subject: Could not mount specified ROOT error when booting Reply with quote

I have finished "first boot" installation stage and run into error. I use LILO for boot-up since I had problems with GRUB configuration. I followed every instruction very carefully, installed genkernel and LILO. Next step is the reboot. I choose the Gentoo in LILO menu. Kernel loads the modules. When the time for mounting comes, I get this error:
Code:
>> Activating mdev
>> Determining root device...
>> Mounting root...
mount: mounting /dev/sda6 on /newroot failed. Invalid argument
!! Could not mount specified ROOT, try again
!! Could not find the root block device in .
Please specify another value or: press Enter for the same, type "shell" for a shell, or "q" to skip...

My lilo.conf:
Code:

   label=Windows

What should I do to make Gentoo boot up?

Hirager,

Welcome to Gentoo.

As this message
Code:

does not list your partitions, it looks like youhave missed the hard drive controller software out of your kernel.
It needs to be built in, not a module.

To provide more precise help, we need to see the output of lspci on your hardware.

Hirager,

I've not seen
Code:
00:06.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] IDE (rev a1)00:09.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] SATA Controller (non-AHCI mode) (rev a2)

You kernel needs
Code:
< > ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support  --->
thats off.
Under SCSI device support
Code:
  │ │    < > RAID Transport Class                                         │ │
  │ │    -*- SCSI device support                                          │ │
  │ │    < > SCSI target support                                          │ │
  │ │    [*] legacy /proc/scsi/ support                                   │ │
  │ │        *** SCSI support type (disk, tape, CD-ROM) ***               │ │
  │ │    <*> SCSI disk support                                            │ │
  │ │    < > SCSI tape support                                            │ │
  │ │    < > SCSI OnStream SC-x0 tape support                             │ │
  │ │    <*> SCSI CDROM support
and under Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers
Code:
 │    [ ]   Verbose ATA error reporting                                │ │
  │ │    [*]   ATA ACPI Support                                           │ │
  │ │    [ ]   SATA Port Multiplier support                               │ │
  │ │    <*>   AHCI SATA support                                          │ │
  │ │    < >   Silicon Image 3124/3132 SATA support                       │ │
  │ │    [*]   ATA SFF support                                            │ │
...
  │ │    <*>     NVIDIA SATA support
...
  │ │    <*>     AMD/NVidia PATA support

If your BIOS can set the SATA into IDE/Compatibility mode, or AHCI mode, use AHCI.
The kernel config options above should work with either but IDE/Compatibility mode is often very slow, as its only intended to allow you to up install windows AHCI drivers before you switch to AHCI mode and things like DMA are not always supported.

Hi there. If i could i will add my post here.
I have exactly same problem as Hirager.
I tried everything i think, but still doesn't work.
Here's my fstab:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't
# needed; notail increases performance of ReiserFS (at the expense of storage
# efficiency).  It's safe to drop the noatime options if you want and to
# switch between notail / tail freely.
#
# The root filesystem should have a pass number of either 0 or 1.
# All other filesystems should have a pass number of 0 or greater than 1.
#
# See the manpage fstab(5) for more information.
#

# <fs>            <mountpoint>    <type>        <opts>        <dump/pass>

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/sda1        /boot        ext4        noauto,noatime    0 0
/dev/sda3        /        ext4        noauto,noatime        0 0
/dev/sda2        none        swap        sw        0 0
/dev/sda4               /magazyn        ext4        noauto        0 0
/dev/cdrom        /mnt/cdrom    auto        noauto,ro    0 0
#/dev/fd0        /mnt/floppy    auto        noauto        0 0

# glibc 2.2 and above expects tmpfs to be mounted at /dev/shm for
# POSIX shared memory (shm_open, shm_unlink).

#  use almost no memory if not populated with files)
shm            /dev/shm    tmpfs        nodev,nosuid,noexec    0 0

And my lspci specification.

Oh, ther's my grub.cfg if needed

Code:
# This is a sample grub.conf for use with Genkernel, per the Gentoo handbook
# http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=10#doc_chap2
# If you are not using Genkernel and you need help creating this file, you
# should consult the handbook. Alternatively, consult the grub.conf.sample that
# is included with the Grub documentation.

timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

Thanks for your advance.

asvalt,

You have
Code:
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset 4 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 05) (prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP])
00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset 2 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 05) (prog-if 85 [Master SecO PriO])

That needs the AHCI driver. My post above for Hirager should work for you.
There has been some changes in what udev needs from the kernel too, the option
Code:
[ ] enable deprecated sysfs features to support old userspace tools
must be off or udev will not make your /dev nodes for sdX and friends.

Thanks for your reply NeddySeagoon.

I have AHCI driver enabled. The option 'enable deprecated sysfs fetures to support old userspaces tools' is disabled.
I tried to do what did you said to Hirager but still doesn't work. It's strange.

I have instaleg Gentoo many times [on Hyper-V too] and always worked perfect for me...
For the first time i tried to use genkernel and boom, error which i cannot fix.

Ok there is a one more n00b's thing. When i recompiling 'genkerneled kernel' is it necessary to copying it after recompilation? [By cp arch/x86_84/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel]?

Regards.

ps: could you verify my grub config file?

No, genkernel will copy kernel, system map, and initramfs to /boot. Of course if the /boot partition is not mounted they will be written to the wrong place. If you want to use genkernel to modify a genkernel produced kernel use
Code:
genkernel --oldconfig --menuconfig all
. If you want to use manual make menuconfig to modify a genkernel produced kernel use
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig
make menuconfig #drivers and file systems needed for boot must be builtin
make && make modules_install
cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/your kernel name

grub.conf should have a new entry added for the new kernel that does not include an initrd line

your menuconfig should be:

[ ] enable deprecated sysfs features to support old userspace tools

two kernels should not dismay you, it is good to keep the old one until a new one is proven to work.

You right, i'll keep it. Although the new one has a better condition than the old one ;-)
I'll keep it for tests.
