I've configured XMMS to play CDs. CDDB correctly identifies the track, the CD spins, XMMS is playing the sucker but no sound through my headphones. I know everything is hooked up correctly because I had this working in Debian. I've tried recompiling arts, QT, kdelibs, kdebase and kdemultimedia with no effect. The XMMS ARTS plugin doesn't work either.

This is quite puzzling. I know I haven't configured something properly but I certainly can't figure out what IT is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Do you get sound when you play sound files like an mp3?

Did you check all your volume controls?

Yes. I've checked my volume controls through Aumix and Kmix. I can play MP3s on my hard drive one minute and then try the audio CD the next and nothing. No sound even though XMMS is playing it and it's spinning in the CD drive. Frustrating.........

If your not digital ripping (cdda) the audio from the cd, you're playing it using the cd-in on your audio card. btw. No sound through headphones do you mean connected to the front of the cdrom-player??????, if you mean connected to your soundcard we are back in businness. Sound won't pass arts or any other pcm/wav sound engine, the signal is directly inputted in your soundcard (cable from cdrom -> soundcard) and it just needs to be set with the mixer, so playing waves doesn't mean that audio from cd ain't still mutted. (some mixers don't display every slider).

Ps. Please delete your other message (same subject no answers, probably a mistake).

Amazing how replacing the cable between the DVD drive and the sound card can fix the problem. Thanks, lx, for putting that thought into my head. Now both KSCD and XMMS work for playing and LISTENING to audio CDs.

xmms-cdread is a plugin that reads and plays cd audio digitally. Good for people like me who are too lazy/cheap to buy a new audio cable. :D (I haven't seen the plug in in Portage, so you'll have to dowload/compile yourself.)

Echo5ive:

You da man! I finally gave up a couple of months ago after only sporadic, unexplainable success with XMMS and CD audio. Your link to the xmms-cdread file was the key. Don't know what was wrong. Perhaps a bad connector on my DVD/sound card as I've tried multiple audio cables.

Thanks,

Have you enabled the cdread plugin in the XMMS preferences? It works for me if I type /dev/cdrom in the Open file dialogue box and press enter. Then the list of all songs on the CD opens up in the XMMS playlist. Going to /mnt/cdrom doesn't work. I have to open the device itself.

HTH,
