Where's the option for enabling the address bar in Nautilus instead of the button paths?

Hit "/" and the button path thing will change to the location bar.

That just brings up a Gtk+ text box at the bottom.

URLs have been deprecated in GNOME 2.30 since they are confusing to the user and unnecessary for your grandmother's workflow.

emerge gconf-editor

then edit:

/apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_location_entry
