I am installing on a Compaq Armada 7800 (I know, I know) with a Intel EtherExpress 100 NIC.

I have Debian running on the same system, and it runs fine..

During the install, I load all the modules -- but upon running cardmgr -f i get:

Code:

(.. bunch of "clean." IO port probes ..)

cs: IO port probe 0x0ca0-0x0cff: clean.
  fn 0 bar 1: io 0x100-0x17f
  fn 0 bar 2: mem 0x6000d000-0x6000d7ff
  fn 0 bar 3: mem 0x6000c00-0x6000c7ff
  fn 0 rom: mem 0x60008000-0x6000bfff
  irq 11
tulip_attach(device 03:00.0)
tulip.c:v0.91g-ppc 7/16/99 becker@scyld.com (modified by daniloc@cs.uni-magdeburg.de for XIRCOM CBE, fixed by Doug Ledford)
eth0: Xircom Cardbus Adapter (DEC 21143 compatible mode) rev 3 at 0x100, 00:A0:C9:BA:4F:6C, IRQ 11.

Now the system is frozen, I even need to yank the battery to get it to reboot.

Is this during the install in that you are trying to get networking working so you can do an emerge rsync and etc? If so then you could look at some of the alternate installation methods. If debian works, you might be able to install gentoo via a network connection that's setup by debian. Try looking at some of the alternate installation methods in the Documentation forum and see if any of them will work for you. :) Good Luck!
