There's not really much we can do. Legally every user owns the copyright on their own posts and has the right to remove them if they so wish. It's annoying but that's life. The best we can do is keep one of the backups around in case they change their mind.

I'm sure I've seen it before, never with someone with so many posts though. It's a shame as you lose a lot of helpful information.

Did you take contact with him, to be sure he wants to erase him from the forum ?
In that case, there are automated tools that are more useful than he is doing...

Or he has been hacked and someone wants to remore his messages...

any reason for his ragequit from Gentoo? most either leave or go "I have had enough". For him to remove his posts is well... dedication and points to some other grievance

More likely, he didn't think that his OTW posts would look all that good during a hiring background check.

That doesn't explain the non-OTW posts which made up more than half of all of the total.

nevertheless, his messages are #null compared to the 5179024 forum messages.
Let's him do those foolish things, there are so much important contributors, and really persistent messages shouldn't stay in a forum, but better in a documentation site (hint hint...)

Totally agree.
We should remove (as example here) messages past a year to an "history" forum

1/ this will lighter the forum (speed, responsivness & stability)
2/ no one really read message past a year because
- search function doesn't handle date search, so you cannot find those kind of message from the mass of answers
- search function keywords blacklist growing size put pressure on filtering old messages https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-223530.html
- there's no point of reading a message to solve an issue with openssh-2.4 where you are at 5.5 and the version isn't even anymore on the tree)
3/ users most of the time just create another thread even a sticky exist, even the issue is recent (see the libpng update) : people always think it's faster to ask same question again and again: and in fact, it is faster! because as time past more users might be able to answer a question already asked & answered.
4/ few users with a tree higher than a year count more on user help in the forum than the forum history itself (might be because of 1, 2 and 3): kinda a mix of "search function is too weak, forum too slow anyway to dig the search results and we're also just lazzy to do the search on old thread)

The bad effects would be
1/ on Gentoo first, as forum statistics would be lowered, some people judge a distro health on forum users or post count and considering how distrowatch judge distro, Gentoo will get deeper in the "dying distro" effect.
Notice that this is stupid, as one interprete this as a sign of health because of many messages & answer = active distro where this also say many messages = many problems = bad distro
2/ Could mostly hurt OTW or Gentoo chat users: must be where the old message importance could be, because less related to software versions
3/ The archeologist users cannot play anymore https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6399223.html#6399223 (lol just for you XavierMiller)
4/ you will need to browser 2 forums to find all your previous messages (i don't think anyone cares, but it would be the case)
5/ need more ressource from infra, because if it's to have the history forum hold by the gentoo forum server, this would lower the speed & stability impact (not that much imo, as i really think none will use the "historyforum")

You might just create a special case for a real certain type of messages (like a sticky bit, but this will be a temporalbit) that keep a message in the forum for a reason: can only think about sad ones :( https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6329139-highlight-rip.html#6329139 or https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-787854.html

If we apply to move messages that just have no answer past a year (and not message with a > year creation date) this should really lighter the forum db + lighter the stopwords list = more speed, more revelant search function
An admin can check this out by just querying the db for thread with no answers past a year (pretty sure an admin have that option) to see the number of messages that would be moved.

Except if my "bad effects" list is too short , only the 1/ should put a problem, and that's more a reputation problem than anything else.

Will report XavierMiller thread, as it's the good section of the forum, but might not be the best thread to speak about that (and i love to report XavierMiller !)

There are quite very useful old messages. Last one I've found was a [TIP] to set-up a simple local-only mail system.

Too much time and resources required for too little benefit.
