I emerged udev to fix a problem booting (udev: missing sysfs features; please update the kernel or disable the kernel's CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED option) now I'm unable to boot. When it's checking the root filesystem it gives me this

fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hda3 /dev/hda3:
I checked my fstab it was not overwritten when emerging so I don't know whats wrong.

Please reply in noob friendly terms. 8O

I forgot to mention I am unable to mount now.

graycolor,

Your current problem us that udev no longer makes /dev nodes for hda and frineds as the old IDE kernel brancg is depreciated.
You need to change your kernel to use the SCSI layer and the low level PATA drivers in libata, which is found in the SATA menu.

At the same time, you have to change /etc/fstab and grub.conf to use the new SCSI names.

As I don't have your lspci output, I can't help with the right low level drivers for you. Other than the low level drivers, in the SATA menu, this post tells what is needed. IF you have an Intel ICH chipset, that post is all you will need.

There is a new option in the SATA menu, not described in that post,
Code:
[*]   ATA SFF support
which you will need on as all the PATA drivers are inside it.

Mount your partitions as you did during the install, get into your chroot and fix things. Post your lspci output if you need help with the kernel options.

NeddySeagoon's Rough Guide to libata Migration

You are probably reading this because your last update updated udev and you are still using the
Code:
<*> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED)  --->
kernel branch. The new udev no longer makes /dev entries for hda and friends as provided by the depreciated IDE drivers, so its time to move to libata. Its actually just too late, because your system won't boot. You get an error about fsck and /dev/ha..
This post describes how to do that.

Boot with a liveCD and mount your filesystem tree at /mnt/gentoo ... the commands below work for a standard layout, if you have other partitions to mount, then mount them too
Code:
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
swapon /dev/hda2
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"
The cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/ allows the network to work from inside the chroot, in case you need to get to #gentoo on irc.freenode.net or read the gentoo forums.

Now you are into your install, you can fix it. First, fix the kernel. Do
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
where you will see
Code:
  │ │    [*] Enable loadable module support  --->                         │ │
  │ │    -*- Enable the block layer  --->                                 │ │

  │ │    [*] Networking support  --->                                     │ │

  │ │        Firmware Drivers  --->                                       │ │
  │ │        File systems  --->

go into the
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
menu
Take a last look inside the
Code:
<*> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED)  --->
menu, note the drivers you use then exit that menu and set it to
Code:
< > ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED)  --->
Thats off.
Move down to
Code:
SCSI device support  --->
and go into the menu, set it to
Code:
  │ │    < > RAID Transport Class                                         │ │
  │ │    -*- SCSI device support                                          │ │

  │ │    <*> SCSI generic support                                         │ │
  │ │    < > SCSI media changer support                                   │ │

  │ │    [ ] Verbose SCSI error reporting (kernel size +=12K)             │ │
  │ │    [ ] SCSI logging facility                                        │ │
  │ │    [ ] Asynchronous SCSI scanning                                   │ │
  │ │        SCSI Transports  --->                                        │ │

  │ │    < > SCSI Device Handlers  --->                                   │ │
  │ │    < > OSD-Initiator library
and exit the menu.
I know you have PATA devices, not SCSI. What has nappened is that the IDE command set was derived from SCSI by simplifying it, its now been reunited.
Even your CDROM will get a SCSI name now.

For the low level drivers, set
Code:
<*> Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers  --->
and enter the menu. Turn on
Code:
[*]   ATA SFF
support if it is off, and scroll down to the PATA drivers, which start at
Code:
...
  │ │    < >     ACPI firmware driver for PATA                            │ │
  │ │    < >     ALi PATA support                                         │ │
  │ │    < >     AMD/NVidia PATA support                                  │ │
  │ │    < >     ARTOP 6210/6260 PATA support                             │ │
  │ │    < >     ARTOP/Acard ATP867X PATA support                         │ │
  │ │    <*>     ATI PATA support
...
choose your PATA drivers, you noted them above.

Related to newer udev rather than libata migration, ensure that
Code:
[ ] enable deprecated sysfs features to support old userspace tools
under
Code:
General setup  --->
is off.

Exit menuconfig and rebuild and reinstall your kernel.
Genkernel users will need to use the --menuconfig option to manually intervine in the kernel configuration process.

Now fix /etc/fstab
Code:
nano -w  /etc/fstab
change every instance of /dev/hda to /dev/sda. If you have a mix of SATA and PATA drives already its a little harder as kernel detection order varies. Normally the PATA deives are found first. This means your existing SATA devices will be renumbered.
i.e. if you have /dev/hda and /dev/sda now, after this change, you will have /dev/sda and /dev/sdb.
Change the hard drive entries in /etc/fstab as required.

Your first CDROM will become /dev/sr0, if you use /dev/cdrom in /etc/fstab it will continue to work as /dev/cdrom is a symlink and udev will create the link to /dev/sr0 correctly. If you use /dev/hdc, you need to change it to /dev/sr0.
Save /etc/fstab.

Lastly, change the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf. The (real_)root=/dev/hda... becomes /dev/sd...
Save the changes and reboot to test.

First off let me say thanks for such a useful guide NeddySeagoon!

I had the same initial problem as the OP, so followed your guide above, and as far as I can tell everything is as it should be... except for one slight inconvenience... I'm still getting the same basic error (only difference being it's now saying that sda3 is missing instead of hda3).

This particular machine has six hard disks and one cdrom drive in it,
1. 400GB boot/system drive (attached to onboard PATA-1, was hda - now sda)
2. CDROM drive (attached to onboard PATA-2, was hdb - now sr0)
3. 4 x 320GB RAID drives (attached to onboard SATA1-4, was sda-d - now sdb-e)
4. 1 x 1TB - general archival stuff. (attached to promise controller, was sde - now sdf)

I plugged in a spare usb stick (sdg) I had lurking about to transfer the logs/configs over to this machine I'm posting this from.

jumping into maintenance mode and dmesg appears to detect all hard disks fine:

I generally try to keep the system up to date, doing weekly(ish) world emerges and kernel upgrades a couple of times a year, had some problems from time to time, but ended up getting through them ok, but I must confess I'm at a bit of loss here. Despite having used gentoo for years I'm far from being an expert, but it would seem to me although libata is doing it's job fine recognising things, udev isnt creating the /dev/sdX entries that the rest of the system needs?

Any help or guidance MUCH appreciated!

Regards,

Pyrran.

Pyrran,

Here is your PATA drive being detected as sda
Code:
scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access     ATA      WDC WD4000AAJB-0 07.0 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 781420655 512-byte logical blocks: (400 GB/372 GiB)

scsi 0:0:1:0: CD-ROM            HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B  C102 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00

 sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 sda4 <
At least, the WD site shows its a EIDE drive.

For mounting root, the kernel makes its own arrangements for detecting drives, reading partition tables and mounting the filesystem. It has to since it can't call mount or read /etc/fstab until after root is mounted. This also means the kernel does not read /dev as /dev is a subdirectory of root, which we already said, isn't there yet.

What is the exact text of the error message?
Do you use an initrd, if so, how was the initrd made. What I have in mind is an initrd, made with a static /dev, that includes /dev/hda3 but not /dev/sda3.
In such a case, the /dev in the initrd is used and mount is called to mount real_root ... maybe I need to update the guide after this is solved.

Heya - thanks for the prompt reply,

No, there's never been any initrd's on this system.

The failure point in the booting process:

Code:
Press I the enter interactive boot mode

 * Mounting sysfs at /sys ...                                                   [ ok ]
 * Mounting /dev ...                                                            [ ok ]
 * Starting udevd ...                                                           [ ok ]
 * Populating /dev with existing devices through uevents ...                    [ ok ]
 * Waiting for uevents to be processed ...                                      [ ok ]
 * Mounting devpts at /dev/pts ...                                              [ ok ]
 * Checking root filesystem ...                                                 [ ok ]
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda3
/dev/sda3:
The superblock could no be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem.  If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

 * Filesystem couldn't be fixed :(                                              [ !! ]

Yes - the WD is an old EIDE drive, and had some misgivings about fiddling with the kernel options initially when you said about things potentially being a bit trickier switching over to libata when using a system with a combination of hdX and sdX drives. That side of it appeared to go well though - as all drives/partitions appeared to be being detected by the kernel fine.

After reading a few other posts scattered about - I'm beginning to suspect I've not got a kernel option set correctly that udev might need to do it's job properly... here's the full config:

Ok,

At the risk of tempting fate, for me this problem appears to be solved...

All HD's are now showing with sdX nodes in /dev, the system boots to the loging prompt without any obvious errors :)

What did I do?

I chrooted into it, had a good long look about the kernel config - ended up changing only one thing to fix the rtc0 error i noticed in dmesg' output, probably unrelated but thought I'd mention it anyway. I'd already re-emerged udev on a previous attempt to solve the problem to no avail sadly, this time however, I thought I'd dig a little further, i did simply a:
Code:
emerge hal

rebooted and starting grinning (while mentally slapping myself silly).

Easy to overlook these things at times I guess... thanks for the help NeddySeagoon :) Hope this info might help others too.

Regards,
Pyrran.

Pyrran,

Code:
udev: starting version 151
Thats an old udev but it is the current stable one for you.
Some things to check ...

etc-update does not have any udev related files to deal with.
Try the testing udev but it should not be needed - if that fixes it please file a bug.

Add
Code:
sys-fs/udev
to your /etc/portage/package.keywords then
Code:
emerge -1av udev

You should be offered version 160.

I'll ask Pappy to look over your kernel but I don't see anything wrong.

Spent a good day on this compiling kernels still not working. I can't do this on my own I need to post my configs/outputs from the command line, but I'm not sure how.

It is much appreciated.

Kind of random, but this emoticon is priceless 8O

Pyrran,

Because it splits into two posts, I'm thinking your .config is way overloaded. Also, please post the results of lspci -n and cat /proc/cpuinfo as well as your /etc/fstab file. Those along with the full on .config will help me to cure your ills.

graycolor,

The same goes for you, but please also include your .config using pastebin. It saves space.

Cheers,
Pappy

Like I mentioned earlier I'm not sure how to post my .config; and the other output results.

Do I just redirect the output to a text file and then just copy the contents over. Is this the simplest method?

For example
Code:

cat /dev/input/mice > test.txt

graycolor,

There is wgetpaste.
Code:
emerge wgetpaste
and use it as
Code:
wgetpaste /path/to/file
or for command output,
Code:
command | wgetpaste

Ok guys here's the long list of configuration files.

/etc/fstab
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/241923/

kernel .config
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/241922/

/boot/grub/grub.conf
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/241924/

lspci
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/241931/

lsmod
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/241932/

Help configuring my kernel is much appreciated :D

Currently the error message now is
VFS: Cannot open root device "sda3" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please apend a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:.............................

It appears I forgot to add this to my kernel
Code:
<*> Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers  --->
   <*>   Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA support

compiling now will post results.

graycolor,

Yep, it is your .config pastebin as =m, wich means the driver needed to communicate with the hard drive is located on the drive that you need the driver to read. That doesn't work.

Your kernel is also full of junk that you will never use. See kernel-seeds.org for a DIY guide to a lean, mean kernel.
You will save a lot of kernel compile time if you remove the junk.

This post shows how to set up the kernel to work with your hard drive controller.

Changed my kernel completely new .config is here
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/241997/

Getting different errors now on boot

attempt to access beyond end of device.....

and ext3-fs error...... ext3_get_inode_loc ... unable to read inode block...

The system reboots itself. So if I was to leave it alone it would reboot forever.

Day 3 going crazy now 8O

Thanks Ned, I was compiling random things I thought I needed; this site makes things very clear now. :wink:

I'll be back when I finish configuring the kernel perhaps in another 3 days.

graycolor,

I really prefer lspci -n so I can know the device PCI numbers. I also need to know which CPU you have (cat /proc/cpuinfo). Please send that information along. Thanks.

Cheers,
Pappy

Yep! I am the one spoken of in mythical terms. I'll be getting to your issue as soon as I finish reading my emails.

graycolor,

For the machine you have, the .config you set up was far too complex. I started you out with a seed, and adjusted it for your machine. If you do a diff, you will see all the things that are incorrect in your situation. This should work with all your PCI and cardbus devices. You may have to tweak a bit for USB devices that don't come up. Most standard devices should work right off the bat.

This .config also works properly with udev. If you still have issues there.

Click here for your new .config. Compile as is.

For the best results, please do the following:

1) Move your .config file out of your kernel source directory (/usr/src/linux-2.6.34-gentoo-r1 ).
2) Issue the command make mrproper. This is a destructive step. It returns the source to pristine condition. Unmoved .config files will be deleted!
3) Copy my .config into your source directory.
4) Issue the command make && make modules_install.
5) Install the kernel as you normally would, and reboot.
6) Once it boots, please post /var/log/dmesg so I can see how things loaded.

Let me knows what happens.

Cheers,
Pappy
