i was jsut sittin there pondering while waitin for xfree to finish... ok so i was pondering for a really long time.... and then i noticed that a huge amount to of it was for compliling all the drivers for all the cards and this seemed to take up a pretty big amount of time.. so heres and idea if its possible, have a use variable to specify which card u have so it wouldnt have to waste hours compilin usless drivers, like use="ati" to only compile for ati... this would save a significant amount of time, this idea (if possible.... i havent really looked into it) could also be used to alsa which also spends most(?) of its time compiling drivers.

If X is compiled with only ATi drivers, and you switch to say an nVidia card, would X have to be recompiled? I could be way off, just a thought. I'm not sure emerge is designed to handle this level of detail.

There's an environment variable that you can set to make ALSA only build and install some specific driver (or set of drivers). Don't remember it off the top of my head, but it exists.

For alsa the env var is called ALSA_CARDS

As for xfree86, this has been discussed before, so you might want to check it out.

I think it should be added as an env var, just like ALSA_CARDS. I'll look into modifying the ebuild and submitting to bugzilla.

This is configured in the hosts.def file if I'm not mistaken.

You're not mistaken. Check the link to the thread I've posted here. It explains it.
