When I installed alsa both mplayer and xine have stopped working . I'm guessing they need to be told to use alsa as the sound output. Does anyone know how to do this?? Thanks

mplayer -ao alsa I belive.

check out man xine or man mplayer. xine --help mplayer --help are quicker references.

you'll probably want to load the oss modules for alsa so oss stuff will work anyways.
snd-pcm-oss
snd-mixer-oss

These can also be specified at the command line but if you want them to use alsa support:
for mplayer edit your $HOME/.mplayer/config and add "ao = alsa9"
for xine edit your $HOME/.xine/config and set "audio.driver:alsa09"

has anybody had any luck at all with using sdl for sound output in mplayer? Back in my slackware days (up until two weeks ago) I had mplayer set up to use sdl:arts for sound (since I run kde). Now, I emerged all the SDL packages, including all related to sound, and while I told mplayer to use sdl:arts I still hear nothing.

Does anybody have any suggestions? USE vars I should have tried, or isues with SDL?

Sound works fine for me in mplayer with sdl. I couldn't get the volume control to work in mplayer no matter what ao I tried, also couldn't figure out how to make it stick to an aspect ratio when someone manually resized the window so I just use Xine.

Sadly, regardless of distro, I've never gotten xine to work. Not under suse, slack or gentoo. I have to suspect it's a video card issue, since I've got an ati rage 128, and I've heard that the ati drivers for x, in general, are mediocre.

No big deal. I just wish I could get sound working for mplayer!

ok try this:

Code:
 mplayer -ao help

this will tell you what audio ouput options you have for mplayer.

If you have the alsa option then -ao alsa might work. If not reemerge mplayer. Then see if it appears. List any errors you get here...

OK, I've taken a snippet from running mplayer from shell. In my ~/.mplayer/config I told it to use ao=sdl:arts since that worked fine under my old slack system, which was running kde.

SNIP:

AO: [sdl] 44100Hz Mono Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
SDL: Samplerate: 44100Hz Channels: Mono Format Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
SDL: using arts audio driver
SDL: Unable to open audio: No available audio device
couldn't open/init audio device -> NOSOUND
Audio: no sound!!!
Start playing...

But -- I know arts works, because, well, not only do my KDE sounds work, as well as kaboodle and noatun, but I'm listenening to XMMS right now, using the arts plugin. So it seems fair to say arts works. I have to assume this is an SDL trick/trouble. Are there config files for SDL? This all "just worked" under slack, and all it took was the old ./configure --blah blah

Any ideas?
