Gentoo has been fun, but just too experimental. When Daniel left I think it was the kiss of death for the distro.

I spend more time trying to find how to get standard apps like mplayer working than doing productive work.

A friend of mine gave Gentoo a try with not much success, but has found Ubuntu to be very useful with none of the trouble I find typical with this very Alpha OS. Gentoo is just what a Windows friend said it is, "just a hacker OS." I'm no hacker and I have found the twitters by Windoze users old.

I'm moving to a productive linux distro and not sorry.

Ciao

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out?

Hate to say it but I agree with Hopeless on this one. If you'll look at his/her post/thread history you'll notice that they like to start topics and then, not always but often, abandon them immediately after (answered or unanswered).
If this is his/her approach to Linux then I dare say Ubuntu will last long either.

Is it even possible for Windows to make him happy when he takes that kind of an approach to operating system maintenance?

I suggest he go back to a pencil and paper. He should be much happier with it.

By the way is this in "Other Things Gentoo"? This is not a support question. It should be in "Gentoo Chat".
