Hi,

I have a nice installation at this point, but my OpenGL perfomance is really bad. What can I do to improve performance enough to be able to use som of the cool GL screensavers out there?

I would also love to get Compiz or equivalent effects running.

My graphics card is a "ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series" (by doing a lspci)

Any thoughts welcome!

TIA, Pontus

I know I'm not using the ati-drivers since it is not installed. But as for what driver is running, I'm stumped...

glxinfo | grep rendering tells me I have rendering, but if it is hardware och software I don't know. How would I find out?

Ok. I'm using a genkernel 2.6.31-gentoo-r10. If you're running the same card there is at least hope... :)

that's your problem, the driver level in that version is low, if you must, then atleast use the latest gentoo-sources in portage

OK! :) Great! Will emerge & compile a later kernel then. I thought about it, but not in the way of solving the OpenGL issue... Will post back.

if not, get libdrm, mesa and radeon from svn/git, that will do the job but beware, that card doesn't behave well with kms

Ok... Tried the new kernel, performance seem to have improved from poor to sluggish, but still far from enjoyable... Guess I have to try the other suggestions you had... Or buy a better GPU... :) That I will think of tomorrow, thanks for the help so far! :)

On HD3300 desktop effects are smooth. OpenGL screensavers too.
Emerge latest gentoo-sources, radeon-ucode, libdrm, mesa and xf86-video-ati.

It would seem we have different chipsets then, I tried what you suggested, but didn't work.

I did try to create a Xorg.conf, using X -configure, but when I use that X locks up and all other consoles are messed up. reboot is required. How would I go about debugging it? It seems at some point after issuing init 6 command, the screen clears and the mouse pointer shows in a good resolution?! Any ideas? :?
