Did you try downgrading the kernel? I'm running 2.6.32-gentoo-r7 and intel video driver with no problems.

I now downgraded the intel video driver to 2.9.1 and the kernel to 2.6.31-r10, which is still to be tested. But this configuration seems to be problematic with xorg-server-1.8, since I always have to restart X after booting to achieve the correct display resolution. This is really annoying.

btw. video-intel-2.9.1 and kernel 2.6.33-r1 (KMS disabled but selected) still freezes, and I think even more often. Now the same problem also occurred with ubuntu-9.10, so its definitely not gentoo specific. But still I don't know who to blame: KMS, the intel driver, xorg-server, or something else...

With xorg-server-1.8 and xf86-video-intel-2.11.0 my PC locks up if xscreensaver kicks off the screen saver. I've also noticed sporadic artifacts on the screen: ex. images in Firefox displayed with a bunch of colored lines through it.

All I can say is that emerging xf86-video-intel-9999 solved the freezing issue for me. System stable for several days now.

What is your kernel and your xorg-server version?

2.6.32, 2.6.33, since today testing 2.6.34_rc5 and xorg-server-1.8.0 (all the time).

Note that using xrandr and playing an OpenGL game was still non-functional until and including 2.6.33 (both threw me back to my loginmgr), 2.6.34 not tried yet, however, no freezes anymore.

I can't confirm that, experiencing freezes with 2.6.33 and xf86-video-intel-9999. Which chipset do you have? mine is GMA 4500 MHD.

You can also try ssh:ing to your laptop when it locks up, if you have a ethernet cable and pc handy, and ssh service started of course.

Or try to restart X with ctl+alt+backspace (although it needs to be enabled in config file).

It seems to me that you should maybe try kernel 2.6.31 + stable X. As someone else suggested this could possibly a kernel problem. I'm using 2.6.31 with stable X packages and have very few problems (except some resume/suspend issues). Intel 945GM

I can confirm that 2.6.31 runs stable with xf86-video-intel-2.9.1 and without KMS, even with xorg-server-1.8.0. I only sometimes need to restart X after booting because it fails to autodetect the correct resolution.

Since the problem is still there in the latest git sources, I guess it will be a very long time until it gets solved for those using "only" testing packages of the official tree....

I agree with this. (Onboard) Video card is:
Code:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

With:
Code:

x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.11.0
kde-base/kdebase-meta-4.3.5
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.33-r1 (with KMS enabled)
media-libs/mesa-7.71
x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.6
x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.6
etc...

Running x86 (not amd64) however.
No random freezes or such - just a slight bit of frame lag during video playback in mplayer (only if I move it around) - though I believe it does that in Windows (Vista/7) as well.

Sounds like it could be a bug with the i915 series cards? Very odd :/

Yeah it's a bummer because latest versions of the intel drivers say you MUST use KMS... so I hope KMS issues get solved sooner rather than later..

I've got a GMA4500 too and haven't seen a freeze in a long time (at least two or three weeks).

Genstorm, are you using a desktop or a laptop? If you are using a desktop, the gma 4500 is different. This would explain why you are having different results. I have a gma 4500mhd. When my system crashes I cannot even ssh into it. I guess that mean my entire kernel is crashing. I'm using kernel 2.6.34-rc6.

yeah, laptop (more specific u100-wind netbook, i.e. x86) here too with the same problem...
mobile 945GME graphic card, xf86-video-intel-2.11.0, xorg-server-1.8.0, kms activated

i can add the following observation: booting gentoo-sources-2.6.32-r5 everything works fine, with gentoo-sources-2.6.33 and gentoo-sources-2.6.33-r2 the crashes occur... but they only occur while the screensaver runs...
thing is: after having the screensaver running for x (dunno 20 or 30) minutes the display is turned off. but this never reached under the 33 kernels, the freezes always happen while the screensaver is still visible. could this be a pointer to where the problem might lurk?

The screensaver is a 3d application that runs at native resolution. There was a bug filed that appears to match our bug. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27040 . It looks like they have not fixed it yet.

i also have freezes inside KDE and i tried out:
not using firefox
not using konqueror
disconnecting my second mouse
not usind su root

when computer freezez it just stops and LED'S on my keyboard begin to blink, numlock and capslock

i noticed that it is always when i do something that my computer freezez, it can stay on all night and then freez when i touch the mouse and click on firefox

lspci >> http://dpaste.com/192378/
Linux version 2.6.32-gentoo-r7 (root@firefly) (gcc version 4.3.4 (Gentoo 4.3.4 p1.1, pie-10.1.5) ) #4 SMP Fri May 7 18:43:11 GMT 2010

when using mplayer nothing else with sound works: clementine, adobe-flash, vlc
having mplayer open and trying to watch the dailyshow makes my firefox crash

ok it seems its not any particular program that is responcible for the crashes

Try using the known stable versions
Quote:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.11.0
kde-base/kdebase-meta-4.3.5
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.33-r1 (with KMS enabled)
media-libs/mesa-7.71
x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.6
x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.6
as Mousee said to rule out arch specific quirks [since Mousee is running x86]...

seems to be similar but maybe is not quite the same, because that bug describes a gpu hanging or picture distortions, while we do have a complete system lockup where only power-off works... right or right? :-P
well, maybe not cuz you can't trust an computer/error to behave logical ;-) hmm, another bug to watch

Phew ... and I thought I was the only one with this draconian problem.

Here is my system details:

Code:

rahul@googly ~ $ uname -a
Linux googly 2.6.33-zen2 #13 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Tue May 4 19:39:31 CEST 2010 i686 Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Code:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Code:

rahul@googly ~ $ eix -I -c "(libdrm|mesa|video-intel|xorg-server|dri2proto|xf86driproto|glproto)"
[I] media-libs/mesa (7.8.1@01/05/10): OpenGL-like graphic library for Linux
[I] x11-apps/mesa-progs (7.7@04/05/10): Mesa's OpenGL utility and demo programs (glxgears and glxinfo)
[I] x11-base/xorg-server (1.8.0@01/05/10): X.Org X servers
[I] x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel (2.11.0@01/05/10): X.Org driver for Intel cards
[I] x11-libs/libdrm (2.4.20@01/05/10): X.Org libdrm library
[I] x11-proto/dri2proto (2.3@01/05/10): X.Org DRI2 protocol headers
[I] x11-proto/glproto (1.4.11@01/05/10): X.Org GL protocol headers
[I] x11-proto/xf86driproto (2.1.0@01/05/10): X.Org XF86DRI protocol headers

Has some one seen if xorg-server-1.8.1_rc2 solves this issue - and is genstorm the only one who can solve the issue using xf86-video-intel-9999?

Then the best you can do is downgrade to the stable version one component at a time until you figure out which one is the cuprit. I'd suggest you after excluding a package to return it to the current version [the one you have now], as to exclude a possible interaction between multiple packages.

When you do find a culprit, start increasing the version of the cuprit until X crashes again.

I'd suggest you'd use `quickpkg' to save the current versions as binary packages (and while you're at it add `makepkg' to make.conf so it'll do it as well for the "new" old versions as soon as you compile them). That will allow you to use `emerge --use-binpkg' instead of compiling again.

That will allow a flexible way to migrate between different versions and test faster.

I am pretty sure I already tested every combination, and there is no way to make kernels > 2.6.31 running stable. So I think its a kernel problem (not really KMS since it is not stable without KMS either).
