Simply turn on the ohci drivers. That issue is addressed with the drivers page. ohci and uhci drivers are known to conflict. That's why only uhci is turned on.

I agree about the Debian page coming up a little short when it comes to listing the ohci drivers properly. I make it clear that this issue exists.

As far as turning ohci usb drivers on as well as uhci, that's not going to happen. I've identified doing so to cause problems...with ohci drivers. If the drivers won't identify with the Debian site, take the xxxx:xxxx hex ID and Google it with the word "linux". That will always let you know what you're dealing with, and generally on the first page of links that comes up with the search.

From settings page 8: "Notes on USB settings: Use only the USB host driver(s) for your host device(s) listed in lspci -n. If you have ohci hosts, use the ohci driver, and vice versa. Sometimes the Debian device database is less than forthcoming about USB drivers. Remember, if it's Intel or VIA, UHCI. Any other motherboard, it's ohci. Turning EHCI support on for machines without EHCI devices has been known to shut down the USB ports completely. Compiling the USB drivers into the kernel prevents a tendency for the USB drivers to shut down unexpectedly. You should only use modules if your host devices demand you pass arguments to the module for proper operation. Otherwise, compile those drivers into the kernel. ohci support is turned off because it has been noted for conflicting with UHCI."

Cheers,
Pappy

I never suggested that you turn on the ohci usb drivers in addition to uhci. I suggested that you add a step where the user does "lspci | grep OHCI" in order to easily determine if they need the ohci drivers. This is much more efficient that Googling every xxxx:xxxx hex ID to see if one of them needs a driver that will leave you dead in the water if it is missing.

The problem is that when the system is totally borken then it is impossible to do any troubleshooting. Having a section somewhere that deals with ohci versus uhci was not much help to me because I had no idea that was what was causing my problem. Nor did I get any help when I posted here with the problem.

It is your project and you should do it exactly as you want, not as I want. I'm just letting you know that the one extra step I suggest would have saved me a lot of grief. It is up to you to decide if saving a few people a ton of grief is worth making everyone do one extra step. I don't think the Google idea you suggested is practical since it would require everyone to Google for every pci device which is a lot of needless work.

I think this is a wonderful project you have created that helps a lot of people. I was frustrated because I couldn't get it to work on my system, I had no idea why, and no one offered to help me. I finally figured out what was the matter so I felt like I should share my solution here to help other people who might get caught in the same bind I was in.

You make the assumption that I'm saying all PCI ID's need to be checked. They don't. When you see a driver that is unlisted, look it up. I do it all the time. Yes, it's time consuming, but life is like that sometimes. I've even provided Google searches so you can do it all from my site.

I have literally spent hours setting up kernels properly for single individuals with strange setups, or PCI ID's that don't resolve properly. Most of that time is spent googling PCI ID's that don't register properly with the Debian site.

I fully understand the issue. I had to reload XP on my roomie's computer today because another roomie can't seem to understand what I mean when I say, "don't install anything." That was a full day out of my reality, even with having pretty much everything I needed at my disposal to do the job. Of course, now only I have admin access, and a lot of pissed off roomies. No more putting five things on the machine that do the same damned thing.

I would never tell a user to do something I wouldn't do myself. By looking up PCI ID's, I learned how better to deal with the profundities of incomplete driver databases. That's why I can include information like the fact that uhci and ohci device drivers can and do conflict on the settings pages.

Besides all that, even though I am not currently trolling the forum for people in need, my setups and my fame here are such that you can always find me, and if you ask, I will set up .configs as well. Just because I'm not quite visible doesn't mean I'm gone. I just have lots of other things to do at the moment.

One of which is take care of an inaccuracy in one of the pages. I'm about to do that now.

Cheers,
Pappy

When I get the site more where I want it, then you can rest assured you'll see me around the forums a bit more.

I have just corrected some incorrect information on settings page 1. The information about heap randomization was incorrect. Thanks to Ryan Thompson for pointing out my error.

Cheers,
Pappy

I don't know that I'll achieve that, but hey, for a self-taught computer fixer, I'm doing ok.

Cheers,
Pappy

PS trawling...ok. That does sound a little better than trolling...even though they are *sort of* homonyms.

I am a fisherman -- spelled with an "F", not a "PH". Trolling is dragging a baited hook and line around hoping that some fish will be stupid enough to hit it. Trawling is dragging a big net around picking up everything in its path.

So how is trolling bad but trawling is OK? 8O

Considering I don't like seafood, either definition is yucky!

While I'm here, I'd like to thank Heartburn for his generous donation to the site. His name will be added to the "Above and Beyond" page as soon as it's finished.

Speaking of which, that page should be done sometime in the next week or so. I have the graphic, I just need to clear a block of time so I can format the html. Lots of projects..not so much time.

Cheers,
Pappy

Well, a troll is also an evil creature from norse mythology. So trolling would could mean "behaving badly". I'm sure the moderators would put a stop to that ;-)

The Norse troll is a noun; trolling is a verb, and it refers to a method of fishing, as described above. :D

Sometimes it is an internet form of "community organizing"... er ... I mean "rabble rousing". A controversial post is made solely for the purpose of starting a fight. This is a proper extension of the fishing technique, since when the fish takes the bait, then you have a fight on your hands, which is exactly what you wanted. :?

Hi,

I am not sure if this is the right thread, but I think the right people will read it :)

I downgraded my kernel to the stable gentoo-2.6.31-r10, using the appropriate kernel seed. Now a strange thing happens:

When I boot and let grub time out, choosing the default entry, I get a kernel panic (without a meaningful output, I guess that my monitor is too small to show the interesting lines..)

But when I press "enter" when grub comes up, the kernel boots without complaints.

How can I understand this?

That's pretty weird.

Can you see exactly what it paniced over by looking at the stack traceback? I know a lot of stuff rolls off the top of the screen when it is in minimum resolution text mode at boot time, and if you don't get thru the boot, then youcan't very well look at the dmesg to see what happened.

I would take a real close look at my /boot/grub/grub.conf file... :?

Thats what I meant, I cant see why it panic, the interesting lines are no longer visible at that stage.

Here is the relevant part of my grub.conf. Nothing special afaik

Code:
# cat /boot/grub/grub.conf

Post the .config, the results of lspci -n and cat /proc/cpuinfo as well as your /etc/fstab file, and I'll see what's wrong with your setup.

Cheers,
Pappy

I have to correct myself: the kernel panic occurs not when using the grub timeout but when rebooting the computer without switching it off. It seems it doesn't make any difference which kernel I ran before the reboot (though I only tested it with Linux, not Windows).

Ok...with the new information you've given, you might have some sort of hardware issue developing.

To aid in troubleshooting, the next time the machine panics, reboot using a Linux install disk, and copy the contents of /mnt/gentoo/var/log/dmesg to another directory or another file name, reboot, and post that file. You will want to refer to the Gentoo Handbook for instructions on how do do that.

Click here for your new .config. Compile as is.

For the best results, please do the following:

1) Move your .config file out of your kernel source directory (/usr/src/linux- ).
2) Issue the command make mrproper. This is a destructive step. It returns the source to pristine condition. Unmoved .config files will be deleted!
3) Copy my .config into your source directory.
4) Issue the command make && make modules_install.
5) Install the kernel as you normally would, and reboot.
6) Once it boots, please post /var/log/dmesg so I can see how things loaded.

If the panic remains, do the above restart with a boot disk so the source of the panic can be identified.

Cheers,
Pappy

At long last, the source for which I've waited, 2.6.33-zen2, has been released. In response, I've just uploaded the .configs for 2.6.33-zen2 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Cheers,
Pappy

Thank you very much Pappy, with your .config I dont have kernel panics any more. What was wrong in my config?

Since things changed with 2.6.32, Could I humbly and respectfully suggest to pappy_mcfae, some conclusive investigations / testings around rcu subsystem settings for modest SMPs. (fanout)
I no longer hope being capable of this myself.
