Porting Solid away from HAL is at a very early stage. None of the hardware parts of KDE can work without HAL and won't for a long time (likely 4.6.0 or later) _________________ My emerge --info
Have you run revdep-rebuild lately? It's in gentoolkit and it's worth a shot if things don't work well.

I was able to run KDE without HAL, but the battery widget broke. I imagine that K3B also had broken, but I did not try using it, so I do not know that for certain. |

Hi,
Got it working with >=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-97.00
In my make.conf I've changed VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" by VIDEO_CARDS="nv" and I did not unemereged nvidia-drivers.
then upgrade xorg-server and added this to xorg.conf
Code: |
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "IgnorABI" "true"
EndSection
|
here is the Xorg log

Of course you are able to run KDE-4.4 without hal. But you miss functionality to an extent that it totally misses the point in using it as a "DE". Might as well migrate to e17 when I have to mount devices manually and can't have power management abilities on GUI level. So, makes no sense to me to turn off hal. Others, don't let me disturb you.
brynstntn wrote: | Genstorm, would you be willing to run tux racer? It will usually crash my kernel in less then 5 minutes. Compiz is not crashing my kernel. Full screen flash apps, 3d games, and logging out is. |
I already would have done, had I had the time for it. Might as well do it now, come to think of it.
EDIT #1: That was... interesting. Starting Extreme tux racer immediately threw me back to kdm, just as xrandr does.
EDIT #2: Second try with suspended compositing started the game, made it into the race, felt my eyeballs falling off (it seems 50% of all frames are rendered black), quit it, aaand was thrown back to kdm - at last!
Btw, xf86-video-intel now is the only live X package on my system, and I didn't have any freeze since then. I suspect that 2.11 was the actual source of misbehaviour and xorg-server-1.8.0 seems to be alright (waits for X to instantly laugh in my face). |

Porting Solid away from HAL is at a very early stage. None of the hardware parts of KDE can work without HAL and won't for a long time (likely 4.6.0 or later) |
So, I keep the latest xserver in my package.mask till KDE-4.6.0! Well, well, that is a bummer indeed. And KDE-4.6.0 will be out next year! _________________ Who shall guard the guards? |

Just why? hal-less xorg-server-1.8.0 doesn't affect KDE in any way. |

So, I can upgrade to 1.8 - keep hal running and everything will be fine? Including krandr? _________________ Who shall guard the guards? |

Yep, as long as hal is running, all is good. I've been running my system that way for a while. _________________ My emerge --info

Support for mounting USB keys from inside KDE and the battery monitor widget stopped working without HAL. Running HAL in the background fixed the battery monitor problem, but it was not until I re-emerged everything with HAL support that the support for mounting USB keys came back. |

Once again what he said was Xorg without the "hal" use flag has no effect on either hal running as a daemon or KDE applications compiled with the "hal" use flag.
If you need/want KDE apps with hal (automounting, etc) then leave it that way.
Xorg-server and KDE/applications are two different things. _________________ PRIME x570-pro, 3700x, 6.1 zen kernel

So, I can upgrade to 1.8 - keep hal running and everything will be fine? Including krandr? |
Exactly, except for when you are using xf86-video-intel (any version) and have compositing enabled which right now unfortunately breaks xrandr.
I have built xorg-server-1.8.0 with -hal +udev.
For KDE 4.4 alone (things like automounting and powerman), the hald daemon is still running. (even though not a single package is built with USE="hal" anymore) |

I updated xfce to the 9999 branch and one of the pieces expected the hal daemon
to be running even though there wasn't even a "hal" use flag for it.
So yes, things will work even without the use flag, which I suppose begs the question
"why even have the flag", but that's for another day. _________________ PRIME x570-pro, 3700x, 6.1 zen kernel

Err, because of apps that have an optional HAL dependency, of course. xorg-server-1.8 can still use HAL if you want. |

Hald is running - but everything is working. Hotkeys, battery widget, usb device hotplugging, everything is working.
Didn't have to touch any configuration file - still have the old style xorg.conf and all touchpad settings are preserved.
That was one smooth update! _________________ Who shall guard the guards? |

I can't set xkb_layout. I tried /etc/xorg.conf, /etc/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf, both of them, /etc/udev/rules.d/50-xserver-xorg-keyboard-layout.rules filled with
Code: | ACTION!="add|change", GOTO="xorg_evdev_end"
ENV{ID_INPUT_KEYBOARD}=="", GOTO="xorg_evdev_end"
ENV{x11_options.xkb_layout}="pl"
LABEL="xorg_evdev_end" |
Neither of them work. What else should I check? _________________ GTK2/GNOME - The weakest link! |

Instead of using udev rules, why not use the default xorg.conf.d directory ? |

Thank you yoshi314, it solved my problem. I'd like to know why "Option "XkbLayout" "pl"" placed in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf after Driver "evdev" didn't work. Probably it was set also to mouse and synaptics, but the don't recognize it, set the defaults (us) and "last option appiled wins". _________________ GTK2/GNOME - The weakest link! |

A newer version of the nvidia driver (195.36.24) is in portage so the hack isn't necessary anymore. |

I finally was able to update yesterday with the new nvidia-drivers. I run kde-4.4.2, and latest stable zen-kernel on my ~86x laptop.
At first I was having issues removing hal. As this causes, k3b, automount, and powerdevil problems. As well as giving me fits with my Alps touchpad. As tapping horizontal, vertical, and circular scrolling no longer were working.
I was able to resolve these by simply building with the hal use flag still active. In my make.conf I still set my INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse synaptics joystick" just like before. Then I rebuilt the pertinent xf86 drivers against the new xorg-server-1.8.
To resolve the Alps touchpad issue was simple. I removed all vestiges of any input drivers from my xorg.conf and deleted my /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics file. Then I opened konsole and started experimenting with synclient. I ran synclient -l to see what options were active. I experimented turning on and off different synclient options until I got it working the way I wanted. Then I edited my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf file.
All I needed to do was add the following lines: Code: | Option "TapButton1" "1"
Option "VertEdgeScroll" "1"
Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "1"
Option "CircularScrolling" "1" |
So that my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf file now looks like this: Code: | Section "InputClass"
Identifier "touchpad catchall"
MatchIsTouchpad "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "TapButton1" "1"
Option "VertEdgeScroll" "1"
Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "1"
Option "CircularScrolling" "1"
EndSection
|
And my /etc/X11/xorg.conf now looks like this: Code: |
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
Option "Xinerama" "0"
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "i2c"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Dell"
ModelName "Sharp"
HorizSync 30.0 - 75.0
VertRefresh 60.0
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce Go 7800 GTX"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Device0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "Coolbits" "1"
Option "TwinView" "0"
Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
|
Everything is now running great! All of my USB devices are automounting and accessible when plugged in, K3B is working great, CDs and DVDs are automounting correctly, printer is working fine and touchpad is better than ever
I hope this helps somebody else who might be having problems.
Ciao |

does xorg-server-1.8.1-RC2 finally work with intel cards? _________________ Computers are like air conditioners:
