i wonder why mine are so slow, I have a fast system

Dual p3s, at 841mhz
Dual Vp6 abit motherboard Via chipset
fast harddrive
hdparm -t /dev/hda:
/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.82 seconds = 35.38 MB/sec

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Enabled
SBA: Disabled

i cant get SBA enabled because i cant find the bios option..

But one thing I noticed is that when I run glxgears it shows 1 cpu at 100% and the other is idle.

maybe there is a way to make it use both cpus...

or maybe my nvidia drivers are messed up

here is my glxinfo

geforce 3Ti 220: (on slow duron 1,3 ghz, which matters more for gears than the GPU)
10320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2064.000 FPS

Maybe I'm stupid, but:
what do glxgears scores mean without stating your screen resoltion and color depth?

[edit]: I mean: just resize the window in which glxgears is running and see the dramatic effect this has on your scores

true, but the resolution didnt affect my scores and normally the default color depth is 16 for X.

but you might as well post it..

1280x1024

I got my scores in 16bpp and on an Athlon 800.

Since glxgears isn't run in fullscreen it shouldnt be much difference in what resolution you are running, or? Anyways, I was running 1600x1200.

alterego: hmmm, i don't think that the gpu (and the fillrate) are the limiting factor ... therefor u should get nearly the same glxgears scores with different color dephts and resolutions. (might be interesting to check :P )

with glxgears i think the geometric transformations (and the transfer of these to the GPU) are the most limiting factor with any modern gpu and glxgears ...

2066 frames in 5.0 seconds = 413.200 FPS

Athlon 700MHz, 384Mb RAM, crappy old TNT2 with 32 megs. 32bpp colordepth.

Yup, I'm buying myself a GF4. :D

geforce 2 pro w/ 1.633 athlon-xp and 512 mb ram @ 284mhz
$ glxgears
7001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1400.200 FPS
7102 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1420.400 FPS
7087 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1417.400 FPS
7105 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1421.000 FPS
7094 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1418.800 FPS

what gives? i used to get 2000 or so and now i am as fast as an mx / duron combo?!?
using 2960 nvidia drivers with desktop at 1152x864 @ 100hz refresh and 24bpp color depth. you guys really use 16 bit color?

Athlon XP1800, Geforce 4 ti4200
16bit 5128FPS
24bit 3302FPS

Pentium 3 800, TNT 1
16bit 785FPS
24bit 379FPS

Color depth obviously makes a big difference.

This would be more interesting if it were Quake 3 scores ;-)

There are simpler ways to make a difference:

AthlonXP 2100+, Crap GF2MX (til I can afford that alluring 4 Ti4600...)

5629 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1125.800 FPS
6954 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1390.800 FPS
6955 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1391.000 FPS
6826 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1365.200 FPS
6956 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1391.200 FPS

But wait, I can boost my scores. <places konqueror window over the glxgears window>

16008 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3201.600 FPS
32145 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6429.000 FPS
32103 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6420.600 FPS
32192 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6438.400 FPS

LOL! Now if only games played well without ever being put on screen I could rival the GF4! :P

Duron @ 900 on kt133 mobo
TNT2 PRO 32 mb

1024x768*16bpp

melle@melle melle $ glxgears
6354 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1270.800 FPS
6890 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1378.000 FPS
7124 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1424.800 FPS
7065 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1413.000 FPS
7125 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1425.000 FPS

Must be the 16bpp or else i'm glad I don't have a geforce mx :)
Edit:
Ok the next result humbles me somewhat :(

1024x768*24BPP

melle@melle melle $ glxgears
3101 frames in 5.0 seconds = 620.200 FPS
3790 frames in 5.0 seconds = 758.000 FPS
3890 frames in 5.0 seconds = 778.000 FPS
3859 frames in 5.0 seconds = 771.800 FPS
3885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 777.000 FPS

IIRC 24bit colour is less efficient than 16 or 32bit colour, because it is not a power of 2...

Redhat used to support 32bit colour in X (I am fairly sure) , but I haven't found it in Gentoo. The figures I gave for my GF2MX are for 16bit, and yes they are crap, because anything with an MX after it is. But I *will* be upgrading and the current card has a nasty habit of overheating and locking the machine after prolonged play on GTAIII, or approx 1 minute of glxgears...

ill get a coupla results... ~ 800 fps or so

and then something nasty will happen

xserver crash
total hang (no kb response anyway... havent tried to telnet in)

everything else (including graphic intensives like q3a and urban terror) run surperbly

do this:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

it will tell you your agp settings, AMD systems have problems with agp4x (sometimes), try turning off agp or setting it to agp 1x or 2x.

Peace.

You must of shrunk your window or something? ti 4600 should be getting around 7000FPS.

At the driver level it's actually using 4 bytes per pixel but we're limited to 24 bit color for a number of reasons so that's what it calls it. It's the same thing in windows, when you choose "32 bit color" you're only getting 24 bit color.

Im confused. How did your frame rate increase MORE than thrice over, without you doing anything...
