I wonder if there are bigger degrees of differences on other CPU types besides Core2. For example, considering how the Atom CPU works, tailoring your make.conf would help yield some better scores than generic i686 I would think once it's supported officially.

I think they need to consider kernel optimizations too. They probably did not compile the kernel for their target architecture.

it's somehow flawed:

they should at least have tried to test same or similar versions to each other of:

kernel version (namely: the Ubuntu kernel)
gcc-version
xorg-server
...


besides that it's a nice in-depth comparison

When I first read it, that thought occurred to me as well. Gentoo allows people to select what versions they want, so nothing stopped them from doing that. The warning that software versions did not match was kind of a message that they do not understand how Gentoo Linux works at all. :/
