Not really; you need to do a standard Stage 3 install, as described in the
Gentoo handbook, using the Live DVD as a running system. I'm pretty
sure the DVD doesn't have any prebuilt packages, but I haven't looked
at it myself.

What's better is to follow the online documentation at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
The DVD is useless if all you want is to install Gentoo.
The 2008 CD you mentioned will probably not work (has it ever?), and even if it did, you'd end up with a 2-year old system that you won't be able to upgrade anyway.

The graphical installer is a very bad idea; the original (2006?) version had a
shot at wiping my partition table, but crashed before it could do so, and from
all reports the 2007 version wasn't much better. If it's not actually dead, it
certainly smells real bad ...

Just boot off somthing you can use easily, like a Ubuntu Live CD, and do a
Stage 3 install according to the Gentoo documentation. (You can boot off
a Gentoo minimal CD to do the install, but its only advantage is that it's
a smaller download; if you have any Linux Live CD/DVD just boot off that.)

Hi, if you want a graphical installer, I suggest that you install Gentoo via the latest SystemRescueCD or Ubuntu and then you open a console.

With that, you will be able to surf the net while installing your Gentoo box :P

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml 8)

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

do you have an 32 bit or 64 bit cpu? 32 bit use x86. 64 bit use amd64, even if it is intel cpu.

mirrors for downloading
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors2.xml

you have a gentoo live dvd. no need to download install iso. your dvd is your install media.

download a stage3 and a portage snapshot while at university.
the portage snapshot has the instructions for building xorg-server, gnome, etc, and will download required packages, automatically, when you use the emerge command.

edit: http://swift.siphos.be/linux_sea/ch09.html#id3008776

so while emerging X server and gnome you may need another gigabyte of material over your slow home connection.

besides the
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml :)

great resources are
http://swift.siphos.be/linux_sea/ 8) especially chapter 7 for help in making kernel and troubleshooting boot problems
and pappys kernel seeds

these are all 64 bit as far as i know. so booting gentoo livedvd check kernel options, probably need to type in
Code:
# gentoo64
press enter
livedvd questions and answers
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/pr/releases/10.0/faq.xml#options

stage3-amd64-20100121.tar.bz2 134 mb
portage-latest.tar.bz2 35 mb

if you like gnome you can also enter gnome instead of kde from livedvd. then mount media, [cdrom, usb drive], that you have your stage3 and snapshot on.
don't know how much you know? i knew nothing when i started gentoo.
http://swift.siphos.be/linux_sea/ch05.html#id2991326 [mount filesystems]
then open terminal and start here;
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=3

if you have further problems state problem and error received.

I think I'd prefer sneakernet over the live DVD, especially as you are going
to have to use that method for most updates. Some individual packages are
far too large for anything but a fast net connection, and I'd guess you need
around 4G in total.

d2_racing,

I have never had any feedback on the HOWTO and I have only followed it twice.
If someone wants to try it an post problems, I'll update it as we go.

Just COPY the mounted root directory (/) (inside the enviroment wich you booted) TO /mnt/gentoo ....

(/mnt/gentoo mounted as sda1 or hda1...) :o
