I am determined to do an installation that doesn't produce error messages on the way. This time I used ssh from a Gentoo laptop to install a new partition on a desktop. I have complied the kernel, set up the config files and booted into the new installation. I should now install the Nvidia drivers and I know from past errors that I need to:

but there is no /etc/portage directory.
At what stage should this directory have been created please?

No worries: it's entirely optional. If you need it, just create it.
