While I agree that such a thing would be great, do you mind elaborating on what the Gentoo community could benefit from having a newsgroup in addition to the irc channel, mailing lists, and forums we already have? Great idea though!

Cheers,

Yes, a newsgroup is a good idea. Much as I like the content in these forums I find browsing them slow and awkward compared to using a newsreader.

There already is a gentoo newsgroup. Its called "alt.os.linux.gentoo". It's new and there is not much traffic as it has not propigated to many servers yet. I am pretty sure that my local roadrunner server does not carry it yet, although news.cis.dfn.de does carry it. News.CIS.DFN.DE is a *free* text only usenet service that you can sign up for at: http://news.cis.dfn.de/en/register.html They add accounts manually, so it may take a day or two to get a response, but its a great service!

As far as getting alt.os.linux.gentoo to your ISP's server, you need to find the email address to your news admin and send a request. Usually they have no problem adding new groups.

I've always had less than pleasant experiences using newsgroups.

Yes, they are far less helpful than many mailing lists and forums. This forum for instance is simply fantastic ;). On Usenet, if there is a thread like "linux is dead" or "kde vs. gnome" there are like 400 follow ups. If some newbie asks how to switch his window manager, no one cares often ;p

I don't know if a forum or a newsgroup environment in and of itself really makes them more or less able to help the people posting to them. I think the important thing is having an active group of people who are willing to answer questions and a group of 'moderators' who are willing to be mean enough to not let things get bogged down with twelve hundred posts on why the Aqua theme for KDE is a rip off. I would think that we already have that here. This is the main reason that I won't use the newsgroup as much as I will these forums.

Good point. Since usenet groups are rarely moderated, they are often too wild to be as useful as a well focused, well moderated forum ;)
