Hi.

It looks like UT2004 happens to lag with time. Or is it just my native resolution (1680x1050)? I don't know...

The issue I'm having is in certain maps, like DM-Insidious, some places on the map make my computer lag terribly, like FPS drops to 3-4 frames, not more. Lagging occurs even while spectating. On that map, lagging occurs near the two tubes on one end of the lower bridge.

[EDIT: I experience lag only if I keep the tubes in the field of view. No lag occurs as long as I make my caracter run sideways with the tubes in my back, for instance.]

I've tried to decrease all video settings to the minimum values (no coronas, no foliage, no dynamic lighting, low-res textures, extremely low everything else). No way. I've also tried to decrease the resolution, like 1280x800 and it seems to help.

I have a Core2 Duo E7300 @ 2.66 GHz with 1 GB RAM and a GeForce 8800GT, 512MB video memory. Does anybody have an idea on what the problem could be? Can UT2004 settings be tweaked to avoid that?

Use Handedness stutter fix first.

Thank you Paul. It was set to "1.0000" before. It didn't help much however. It's a little less stuttering now but still stuttering. Decreasing resolution to 1280x800 did completely get rid of the problem but I'm not satisfied. UT2003 plays flawlessly on the same map at full resolution...

Perhaps try my UT2004.ini

Also, tweak the kernel scheduler - I'm using 2.6.31-cfs-tweaks.patch from that thread.

Using your INI file didn't help either :( . 1280x800: fluid, full screen: sucks (only at places I indicated, the rest is fluid).

I wonder if changing the scheduler would help too but I'm going to try that. Does it work with Gentoo sources (as I've seen this patch comes from Zen sources)?

Since I don't use Gentoo anymore, you're going to have to answer that question all by yourself.

But I expect the answer is yes.

Hello Paul.

I've tried Zen sources now they're available in Portage but it doesn't cure the problem :( . As for my tests ingame, lagging occurs only when the tube with the alien inside starts to be in the field of view. Lagging also occurs as I'm running forward towards that place, wherever I come from... I'm feeling desperate.

The scheduler I'm using is BFS, which is included in the pf patchset.

I'm also using BFS since it's in Zen sources. I'm using zen-sources-2.6.31_p9 in fact.

EDIT: Since the lag phenomenon disappears when I decrease resolution, could it be due to my video card's memory? How can I check how much RAM my card is using? (I have a GeForce 8800 GT/PCI/SSE2 with nVidia drivers 173.14.20.)

Due to the libpng issue, I've had to rebuild all packages (emerge -e world). I've also tried to switch to the latest nvidia drivers (195.36.24) and the problem seems gone for good!

EDIT: Also running 2.6.33-zen2 kernel with BrainFuck Scheduler BTW ;) .

I've just done a quick check, and the stuttering issue seems much better than when I last checked.

I'm on libpng 1.2.41, pf kernel 2.6.33-pf4, and nvidia 195.36.24, on 32-bit, on a different distro - Lunar.

I suspect that the nvidia update is the most relevant to this video-stuttering problem. Which would imply that this was an nvidia driver bug all-along.

Indeed. And the only reason why I stayed so long with the older drivers was I suspected they caused X to lock up although it was fbcondecor... See? Stupid causes that lead to dreadful annoyances...
