Hi

I have just carried out an update of several packages and when I try to boot into the system I get an error telling me that udev 'failed somehere and that /dev/zero does not exist. No /sbin/udevd'

I have chroot'ed into the broken system and tried to re-emerge udev and get the following:
...............................................................................
(chroot) localhost / # emerge udev
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild U ] sys-fs/udev-146-r1 [141] USE="devfs-compat%* -extras%"
[blocks B ] sys-fs/device-mapper ("sys-fs/device-mapper" is blocking sys-fs/udev-146-r1)

* Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
* installed at the same time on the same system.

('ebuild', '/', 'sys-fs/udev-146-r1', 'merge') pulled in by
sys-fs/udev required by ('installed', '/', 'sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r6', 'nomerge')
sys-fs/udev required by ('installed', '/', 'net-wireless/bluez-4.39-r2', 'nomerge')
>=sys-fs/udev-124 required by ('installed', '/', 'sys-fs/cryptsetup-1.0.6-r2', 'nomerge')
(and 5 more)

('installed', '/', 'sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.24-r1', 'nomerge') pulled in by
>=sys-fs/device-mapper-1.00.07-r1 required by ('installed', '/', 'sys-fs/cryptsetup-1.0.6-r2', 'nomerge')
sys-fs/device-mapper required by ('installed', '/', 'app-crypt/truecrypt-6.3', 'nomerge')
............................................................................

What is the best way out as this because I can't see that I can delete either udev or device-mapper.

percy

Take a look at this thread : device-mapper blocks udev, but needed for cryptsetup - https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-801954.html

(edit - messed up the URL, slightly)

I will keep an eye on this and see if anyone comes up with a solution.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads.
See device-mapper blocks udev, but needed for cryptsetup.
